Position Summary
Summer Day Camp Counselors create a safe, positive, and engaging environment for children throughout the summer program. Counselors lead activities, supervise groups, model YMCA values, and help ensure each child has a fun and meaningful camp experience. This role requires energy, patience, teamwork, and a genuine love for working with kids.
Key Responsibilities
Child Supervision and Safety
- Actively supervise a group of children at all times, ensuring safety and appropriate behavior.
- Follow all YMCA policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
- Maintain accurate attendance and ensure proper sign in and sign out procedures.
- Respond calmly and appropriately to behavior concerns or minor injuries.
Program Leadership
- Lead and participate in daily camp activities, including games, crafts, sports, STEM projects, and special events.
- Help set up, clean up, and transition between activities smoothly.
- Encourage participation, teamwork, and positive social interactions.
- Support weekly themes and assist with planning activities when needed.
Relationship Building
- Build positive, respectful relationships with campers, families, and fellow staff.
- Serve as a role model by demonstrating the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Communicate with parents in a friendly, professional manner.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 14 years old
- Experience working with children in any setting. For example, babysitting, school, church, sports, etc. is helpful.
- Ability to lead activities, stay active throughout the day, and maintain a positive attitude.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- CPR and First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
- Must pass DCI and FBI background checks
Work Environment
- Indoor and outdoor settings, including playgrounds, parks, and field trip locations.
- Active, fast paced environment with frequent movement, noise, and group activities.
- Requires lifting up to 25 lbs, standing for long periods, and participating in physical play.
