POSITION TITLE: Afterschool Instructor
DUTIES:
The incumbent conducts activities for children 5 to 12 years old in a classroom setting.
- Provides a schedule that balances activity and quiet, free and structured, individual and group, indoor, and outdoor activities
- Communicates with children to develop appropriate language skills
- Manages classroom and maintains discipline in the classroom using positive guidance techniques and promoting self-control among children
- Designs and develops educational materials and aides for individual, small, and large group activities and special aides for children with learning problems
- Organizes space into identifiable areas that encourage appropriate and independent use of materials
- Interacts with children in indoor and outdoor play and games providing close supervision to the whole group and to the environment at all times
- Promotes a positive social and learning experience at meal times
- Keeps cleanliness and organization in classroom area
- Administers first aid or medicine according to center’s procedures
- Follows center procedure for maintaining health records and administering medication and first aid as well as keeping written record of accidents and/or unusual incidents
- Maintains inventory of classroom materials and equipment updated to keep record of the used and incoming supplies
- Reviews catalogs and requests educational materials from the Early Childhood Coordinator
- Work as a member of a team with others in the classroom and the program, including substitutes, parents volunteers, and support staff from funding sources
- Supervise arrival and dismissal of children following procedures (sign-in, sign-out forms, etc.)
- Participates in fund raising events and center related activities
- Attends staff meeting conferences and workshops as needed
- Responsible for classroom bulletin boards, meaning appropriate decoration and information
- Perform other duties, such as answering telephone and taking messages, washing cots, toys and shelves periodically, checking daily on the facility before going home, assisting in other areas as needed, and changing work schedules if requested
- Compliance with mandatory child care workers, such as: fingerprinting, criminal records, child abuse registry, physical examination, tuberculin test, affidavit of good moral character, letters of references, Child Abuse Guide for Professionals pamphlet, and any other pertinent information.
KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must obtain DCF 45 Childcare Hours within one year of appointment.
- Knowledge of Child Development and Psychology
- Knowledge of HRS regulations, Child Day Care Standards Manual, Florida Chapter 10M-12
- Ability to maintain a positive discipline by encouraging self-control among children
- Ability to recognize potential behavioral problems and/or learning disabilities in children to be able to support the child and refer him/her and the family to the proper agency
- Ability to develop educational materials and teaching aides
- Story-telling ability
- Ability to use audio-visual equipment
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English and Spanish
- Decision making and problem solving skills
- Knowledge of and the ability to administer simple first aid, take temperature bandage, etc
- Ability to develop skills in observing and recording information about children and their families in a non-judgmental manner for use in planning and carrying out the daily program.
SCOPE AND EFFECT:
The purpose of the work is to provide quality tutoring services through developmentally appropriate practices to a group of school age children.
Tutors integrate their work and constantly adapt their skills always thinking of the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development of the whole child. Tutors individualize their work with each child while meeting the needs of the group; they promote multiculturalism, support families of different cultural background, and meet the needs of children with special needs. Tutors also demonstrate personal qualities such as flexibility and positive style of communicating with young children and working with families. Tutors keep up-to-date on laws and policies concerning child abuse and neglect, and learn effective ways of working with affected children and families.
PERSONAL CONTACTS AND PURPOSE:
It includes face-to-face daily contacts with children, parents, and family members as well as with occasionally visitors and/or funding sources staff. Answering the telephone and taking messages from different agencies in the community as needed. Personal contacts are also made with program administrator and coworkers.
The purpose and extent of each of these contacts depends upon the situation and ranges from specific instructions from parents related to child’s needs to easily understood messages given over the phone or in person. Tutor contacts Center Director in regards to children illness and/or any special situation that may require the presence of the parent on the premises. This position also requires the skill to deal effectively with parents that may be affected by a hardship situation and react negatively in a given circumstance.
PHYSICAL DEMAND:
Work is performed in a child day care setting. It involves the coordination of activities to work effectively with young children at their eye level, meaning bending, and sitting on the floor or small chairs. While supervising children outdoor activities, the staff teaches and participates in developmentally appropriate games and activities. Carrying lightweight such as cots, trashcans, and more general classroom furniture is also expected.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment of a child day care setting is planned to meet year round requirements of the young child and his family in a center that opens eleven hours a day to accommodate family needs. Environment could be hazardous because there are more chances to get sick due to close contact with small children, exposition to vomit, coughing, runny noses, diarrhea, and other common diseases among children. Washing hands constantly and before and after assisting a child is a mandatory health practice.
