What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teaching Assistant position at O'Connell Children's Shelter?
We are a dedicated residential program providing a safe, nurturing, and therapeutic environment for children and youth aged 12–18, including those identifying as LGBTQIA in foster care. We seek individuals committed to teaching our residents a wide range of skills, with a focus on interpersonal development, preventive care, independent living, social skills, and physical and mental health.
Entry-Level Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Be able to pass comprehensive background checks, including a national fingerprint-based record check.
- Have the ability to lift up to 25 pounds and assist with daily physical activities as needed.
- Be available to work flexible hours, including some evenings, weekends, or overnight shifts. Available shifts are: 6 am-2 pm, 2 pm -10 pm, or 10 pm -6 am.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working with children and youth, ideally in a residential or therapeutic setting.
- Certification in CPR and First Aid (or willingness to obtain shortly after hiring).
- Training in crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, or trauma-informed care.
- Knowledge of psychological, social-emotional, and trauma-aware practices, as well as cultural competencies.
- Familiarity with case management or documentation practices.
- Basic computer skills for record-keeping and documentation.
- A valid driver’s license.
