Job Title: Auditor's Clerk

Department: Auditor's Office

Starting Wage: $45,000 - $55,000, dependent on experience

Employment Type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

O'Brien County is seeking an organized, dependable, and motivated individual to join the Auditor's Office as an Auditor's Clerk. This position supports the County Auditor across a wide variety of accounting, elections, and customer service functions, and offers the opportunity to learn multiple areas of county government operations.

About the Role

The Auditor's Clerk provides accounting and customer service support to the Auditor's Office. Under general supervision, this position maintains financial transactions and records, compiles reports and summaries, and checks and verifies data for completeness and accuracy. Work is often quantitative in nature, and the role typically uses computerized data management and analysis systems.

The applicant will be responsible for supporting the County Auditor in various tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Elections
  • Clerk to the Board of Supervisors
  • County budget
  • Annual financial reports
  • Tabulating taxable property valuation and tax statements
  • Passport applications
  • Serving as backup for claims, payroll, and updating county real-estate plats

Essential Functions

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
  • Process and submit web-based financial reports
  • Enter and post invoices into the computer system
  • Scan and file paid invoices and statements
  • Assist with phone calls and real estate inquiries
  • Perform support functions for the County Board of Supervisors
  • Assist in yearly audit preparation
  • Assist as needed in Payroll, Budgeting, and Elections
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the County Auditor

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED with accounting/customer service experience, or equivalent education and experience

Additional Skills

  • Answering telephones and responding to public needs, questions, suggestions, and complaints
  • Preparing periodic reports for various agencies and organizations
  • Prioritizing issues and communicating appropriately with supervisor
  • Sorting, reviewing, coding, completing, distributing, and filing routine documents (invoices, timesheets, payment vouchers)
  • Receiving and processing payments, entering payments, and balancing receipts
  • Analyzing financial documents for accuracy
  • Utilizing office equipment including computers, spreadsheets, database applications, multi-line phones, copier, fax, and adding machines
  • Establishing effective working relationships with county employees, other agencies, and the public

Work Schedule

Office hours are 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with additional hours as needed, especially during election seasons (including some evenings and Saturdays).

Physical Requirements

  • Stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, walking, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds in limited situations, such as testing, delivering, and maintaining election equipment
  • Close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Primarily office-based work; extended periods of sitting

Work Environment

  • Frequent time pressures, rush jobs, and urgent deadlines
  • Regular phone calls and other distractions
  • Occasional interactions with irate or disturbed individuals
  • Busy and occasionally stressful work environment
  • Out-of-town training as needed
  • Extended hours during election periods, including Saturdays
