Role Description : The International Scholar Advisor is a full-time, on-site role based in New York, NY. This position provides advising and support to international scholars, faculty, and researchers on visa status, immigration regulations, and related compliance requirements. Daily responsibilities include reviewing and processing immigration documents, maintaining accurate records, and communicating complex regulatory information in clear, accessible language. The advisor collaborates with academic departments and administrative offices to facilitate scholar appointments and mobility, and helps coordinate orientation and informational programs. The role also involves problem-solving individual cases, monitoring regulatory changes, and contributing to initiatives that enhance the international scholar experience and foster cross-cultural understanding at NYU.
Qualifications :
- Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. immigration regulations and processes applicable to international scholars (e.g., J-1, H-1B, other nonimmigrant categories).
- Strong advising, counseling, and customer service skills, with the ability to support individuals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal or policy information clearly and professionally.
- Solid organizational and administrative abilities, including attention to detail, record-keeping accuracy, and effective time management in a high-volume environment.
- Proficiency with standard office software and databases; experience with student or scholar information systems or immigration-related platforms is beneficial.
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues and campus partners, demonstrate sound judgment, and manage confidential information responsibly.
- Bachelor’s degree required; a master’s degree in international education, higher education administration, public policy, or a related field is preferred.
- Prior experience working with international populations or in an international education, global mobility, or related setting is highly desirable.
