Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Pathology Laboratory Helper.

In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for assisting staff members with the day to day operation of the Laboratory, by providing daily maintenance, clinical, and clerical support. Responsible for maintaining a clean and well-organized work area in the gross room and histology laboratory. Filing of specimen blocks, distribution of slides, changing chemical solutions and assisting pathologists, house staff, management, and technicians in multiple clerical tasks. Maintenance of records and programming of instruments under supervision.

Job Responsibilities:

• Assisting pathologists, house staff, management, and technicians with requests/projects as directed.
• Maintenance: Maintaining a clean and organized work area in the gross room and histology lab.
• Responsible for monitoring, cleaning and sterilize (decontaminate) laboratory equipment, glassware, benchtops, and instruments.
• Preparing and removing sharp containers when full.
• Inventory Control: Monitor inventory, stock and maintain laboratory supplies alerting supervisor to reorder when needed.
• Dating of supplies and solutions. Ensure all necessary supplies are organized and stocked for operations in both areas.
• Filing specimen blocks for short term and long term storage.
• Load and unload, processor, stainers and coverslippers under supervision.
• Assists in changing reagents under supervision.
• Responsible for all assigned clerical duties associated with the Histology & Gross Room
• Under supervision assist with completing daily, weekly and monthly QC and temperature charts.
• Complete daily morgue census.
• Discard specimens, prepare for weekly pickup or transport to loading dock as necessary.
• Assists with organization and distribution of slides to house staff and pathologists.
• Under direct supervision completes cassette loading and programming of tissue processors.
• Preparation of hazardous waste for weekly pick up.
• Transportation of hazardous waste and expired chemical to vault as necessary.
• Preparation of histology trash retainment and discard.
• Daily reconciliation of specimens and/or worklists.
• Proficient and accurate use of omnitrax when directed and necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Degree with science courses (biology and/or chemistry).
• Some exposure to laboratory assistance and maintenance (accessioning not included).
• Good communication skills.
• Excellent computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
Associate's Degree with coursework in chemistry, biology or related science. 6 months of Anatomic Pathology laboratory (gross room and/or histology laboratory) experience.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $45,155.30 - $49,143.94 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
