Duties Description

Trades Generalists perform a variety of skilled and semiskilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks in the mechanical, building, motor equipment, and electrical trades.

Trades Generalists are supervised by higher-level trades positions, such as Trades Supervisor (Carpenter), Maintenance Supervisor 1, 2 or 3, or a program administrator with varied responsibilities, in addition to facilities and equipment maintenance and repair. Generally, work priorities are prescribed, material is furnished, the nature and extent of the work to be performed is given, and detailed plans, diagrams, and specifications are provided. However, a Trades Generalist may be required to work from rough sketches or from oral instructions. Although the work of a Trades Generalist is inspected periodically by the supervisor, incumbents are expected to work with considerable independence as is typical of a skilled tradesperson.

A Trades Generalist may supervise a subordinate maintenance staff or responsibility by making assignments, giving instructions, and observing and inspecting work performed to ensure that instructions have been followed and that the quality of the work is satisfactory.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs a variety of carpentry related duties, including but not limited to installations and repairs of flooring, repair and adjustment of doors and hardware, stairs, railings, and replacement of ceiling tile.
  • Performs minor electrical duties including but not limited to replacing receptacles, light fixtures, and circuit breakers.
  • Repairs, installs and maintains plumbing fixtures and appliances, including but not limited to: sinks, showers, baths, commodes, dishwashers, domestic water and drainage distribution systems.
  • Preforms a variety of painting related duties including but not limited to preparing surfaces, priming and painting.
  • Performs maintenance, and preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment including but not limited to bathroom exhaust fans, clothes dryers, sump pumps and generators.
  • Requires daily travel within the district.
  • May require some travel within NY State to assist other districts with special projects.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the trade or trades to which assigned.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Will be required to train and supervise others.
  • Candidate will be trained in the operation and maintenance procedures as related to Asbestos Containing Materials.
  • Will be required to plan and lay out work, develop time and material lists for projects assigned.
  • Will be required to read and interpret plans, codes, diagrams, architectural blueprints and specifications.
  • Repairs locks that have become jammed or are otherwise inoperative.
  • Using small hand tools, removes locking mechanisms from doors, gates, cabinets, and other hardware.
  • Opens the lock and removes defective parts or debris causing malfunction.
  • May manufacture springs, tumblers, or levers to fit a specific lock.
  • Installs and maintains the lock and key system in a State facility.
  • Using a variety of small hand tools and following manufacturers' instructions, installs new locks in doors, windows, and cabinets.
  • Periodically sets lock cylinders and changes combinations on locks.
  • Keeps extra keys for locks in secure area.
  • Records placement of locks, lock combinations and number of keys fitting each lock; adjusts records to reflect changes.
  • Installs, adjusts, and repairs door operators and closers.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Non-competitive: four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Additional Comments

  • Please note that starting salary for this title reflects the Downstate adjustment. Posted Hiring Salary includes the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($50,425) and Downstate adjustment ($4,000). Downstate Adjustment is also added to the job rate ($61,548).
  • For CSEA positions: Local Bidding Agreements will be honored.
