Position Summary: The Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality (TRQ) is responsible for the recruitment of diverse and talented teachers to meet the staffing needs of New York Public Schools (NYCPS) and programs, as well as being responsible for initiatives to promote the equitable and quality distribution of teachers across all schools. Research has repeatedly shown that teacher quality is the single most important variable in raising student learning. TRQ accomplishes its work through a strategic, data-driven approach that focuses on the following efforts:

  • Serve as the primary marketing agent and source of information to individuals seeking to become NYCPS teachers, to recruit a large, high-quality, equitable and diverse pool of candidates.
  • Design and manage recruitment and preparation programs, and pipelines for individuals to become NYCPS teachers, especially to address subject and geographic shortage areas.
  • Select a diverse and high-quality pool of candidates to become teachers through rigorous, research-driven, screening processes.
  • Design and implement high-quality field experiences for teacher candidates in both alternative certification and traditional pathways.
  • Provide inclusive best practices and support to schools to help them make optimal, local hiring decisions.
  • Lead pipeline and pathways to teacher certification for diverse candidates within our communities to promote an equitable distribution of teachers across all schools.
  • Support new teachers with consistent onboarding experiences across the system when they are hired and throughout their first year.

TRQ is looking for an Operations Assistance Coordinator in the Strategy, Data, Admissions and Systems team to support the applicant review and provide related customer service. The Operations Assistance Coordinator will play a key role in the TRQ ability to create and manage the candidate pool for the various teacher pathways to support school needs. Performs related work.

Reports to: Alternative Certification Candidate Selection Officer

Direct Reports: N/A

Key Relationships: Strategy, Data, Admissions, and Systems Team; Recruitment Team; and other teams and staff within the Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality, as well as the Applicant Services Team and HR Connect.

Responsibilities

Application Review & Support

  • Review and assess applications for various teacher pathway programs, ensuring completeness and alignment with program criteria.
  • Provide customer services to applicants regarding missing materials, next steps, and timelines.
  • Collaborate with program teams to flag and escalate applications requiring further review.

Customer Service & Troubleshooting

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for inquiries related to teacher pathways, providing timely and accurate information.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to applications, platform access, or general program questions.
  • Maintain a high standard of professionalism and empathy in all communications, ensuring a positive experience for all stakeholders.

Cross Team Collaboration

  • Compile and share insights and trends to help track application review progress and inform priorities.
  • Add capacity to other projects during recruiting peak season.
  • Support joint planning for recruitment season and contribute to insights and best practices.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one (1) year of experience as described in “1” above.

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, individuals must have two additional years of the experience described in "1" above

Preferred

  • Excellent customer service orientation with strong spoken and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively and work through others to achieve shared goals.
  • Experience working in fast-paced environments, particularly within education or government sectors.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, storytelling, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Advanced analytical thinking and creative problem-solving skills, including the ability to ask insightful questions and provide constructive feedback.
  • Project management experience, including goal-setting, planning, implementation, and progress tracking.
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI) and advanced spreadsheet functions (Excel, Google Sheets).
  • Technical proficiency and the ability to troubleshoot systems and tools effectively.

Salary: $72,114 - $79,325

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
