What are the responsibilities and job description for the Administrative Retirement Benefits Examiner M-3 position at NYC Careers?
The NYCERS Disability Case Management Unit is seeking a qualified candidate to work as a Unit Manager. Reporting to the Client Services, Associate Director for Disability Case Management and with some latitude for independent judgement this position will have as primary responsibilities:
Direct supervision of the Case Management Team Leads. Ensuring that the Team Leads are provided all necessary guidance for the successful operation of their work.
Liaising with the NYCERS Medical Board Chair and physicians; specifically on the preparation, completion and distribution of Medical Board Reports; ensuring timely and accurate processing.
Liaising with the Disability Administrative Unit to ensure:
Direct supervision of the Case Management Team Leads. Ensuring that the Team Leads are provided all necessary guidance for the successful operation of their work.
Liaising with the NYCERS Medical Board Chair and physicians; specifically on the preparation, completion and distribution of Medical Board Reports; ensuring timely and accurate processing.
Liaising with the Disability Administrative Unit to ensure:
- The timely processing of Accidental Disability appeal requests for applicants and the Board of Trustee ratification of Disability Retirement and Accidental Death Benefit applications;
- That sufficient appointment opportunities are available for clients to meet with the Medical Board or Independent Medical Examiners.
- Maintaining and updating as needed the Disabilities Team procedural manual for case management processes.
Minimum Qual Requirements
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 12 credits in mathematics, statistics, accounting, and/or actuarial science and four years of satisfactory full-time experience implementing the provisions of a retirement plan involving the use of mathematical, statistical, actuarial or accounting computations, 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity or supervising professionals implementing the provisions of a retirement plan involving the use of mathematical, statistical, actuarial or accounting computations; or
2. An associate degree or 60 credits from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by 12 credits in mathematics, statistics, accounting and/or actuarial science and six years of satisfactory full-time experience as indicated in “1”; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have 60 credits from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by 12 credits in mathematics, statistics, accounting and/or actuarial science and the 18 months of experience in a supervisory, administrative, managerial or executive capacity as described in “1” above.
2. An associate degree or 60 credits from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by 12 credits in mathematics, statistics, accounting and/or actuarial science and six years of satisfactory full-time experience as indicated in “1”; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have 60 credits from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by 12 credits in mathematics, statistics, accounting and/or actuarial science and the 18 months of experience in a supervisory, administrative, managerial or executive capacity as described in “1” above.
Preferred Skills
- Must be able to work in a diverse and fast-paced environment and have the ability to manage and complete tasks by indicated deadlines and in an accurate manner.
- Must have a working understanding of NYCERS pension plans and the disability retirement application process.
- Must have experience reviewing and editing technical documents/reports
- Must have at least 2 years of supervisory experience with direct reports.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must be able to deliver great customer service.
- Prior experience working in a clinical case management environment a plus.

Residency Requirement
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
