What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Estimator position at NY Mechanical Contractor - HVAC?
Who We Are
We are a privately held mechanical contractor with nearly 80 years of history, and a reputation built on doing things right. Our work spans commercial HVAC construction across the New York metro area including tenant fit-outs, hotels, entertainment venues, retail spaces, and more, with the vast majority of our projects located in New York City.
Our team is close-knit and experienced. Most of our people have been here for well over a decade, and we take pride in taking care of them. We are now at a point in our company's evolution where we are actively investing in the next generation as we look to bring in motivated, capable people who want to grow with us for the long haul.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a Mechanical Estimator to join our estimating team in our office on Long Island. This is a mid-level role for someone with hands-on commercial mechanical estimating experience who is ready to keep growing and who wants to do that in an environment where their effort and judgment will genuinely matter.
You will work directly under our Head of Estimating, contributing independently to a wide range of bids in an environment where there is a lot of knowledge around you and genuine investment in helping you develop. The projects you estimate will range from smaller scopes to jobs in the tens of millions of dollars. The end customers include fashion brands, sports teams, law firms, tech companies, and more.
We want someone who is curious, outgoing, and genuinely energized by the idea of building something. You’ll develop relationships with GCs, subs, and clients; a stronger estimating process; and a career with real room to grow.
What You’ll Do
- Independently prepare detailed estimates for commercial HVAC construction projects, ranging from small scopes to large-scale jobs in the tens of millions of dollars
- Analyze mechanical drawings, specs, and bid documents to identify scope gaps, errors, and opportunities others might miss
- Develop thorough proposals with well-reasoned qualifications and cost breakdowns
- Participate in pre-bid meetings and job site walkthroughs to assess field conditions firsthand
- Build and maintain working relationships with GCs, subs, engineers, and vendors
- Collaborate with the Head of Estimating for review and sign-off, and with PMs and field leadership to ensure smooth handoffs on awarded work
- Help identify better ways of doing things whether that’s process, tools, or communication and bring those ideas forward
What We’re Looking For
The right person for this role has:
- Meaningful experience estimating commercial mechanical (HVAC) construction. You’ve done this before and know what good looks like
- Strong reading comprehension of mechanical drawings and specifications
- A track record of building real relationships with GCs, subs, vendors, or clients; not just transactional ones
- The judgment to know when to ask a question and when to make a call
- Genuine interest in learning and improving from the people around you and on your own
- An outgoing, professional presence. Someone who can represent us in a room
- Comfort with Excel and standard office tools; familiarity with estimating software or openness to learning it is a plus
A Note on Location
Our office is based on Long Island. More than 90% of our project work is in New York City but you get to skip the commute into the city. For candidates who have been grinding through that commute, this is a genuine quality-of-life difference. We’ve been here for nearly 80 years and plan to be here for a long time to come.
