Facilities Custodian

The Facilities Custodian keeps Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital clean, sanitary, and safe for patients, clients, and staff. This dedicated team member takes over the work previously handled by a contracted cleaning crew, and holds the hospital's cleanliness standard as part of our culture of care.

Position: Facilities Custodian

Location: Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital, Gardnerville, NV

Key responsibilities

The custodian cleans every patient, client, and staff area to a hospital-grade standard, on a daily rhythm with deeper weekly and monthly tasks.

Daily

• Sweep, vacuum, and mop all floors, including exam rooms, treatment, surgery, radiology, pharmacy, kennels, wards, and hallways.
• Clean and disinfect exam tables, counters, door handles, and other high-touch surfaces between and after appointments as directed.
• Clean, restock, and sanitize client and staff restrooms, including soap, paper products, and trash liners.
• Keep the lobby, reception area, and entryways tidy, with glass, doors, and seating wiped down.
• Clean and disinfect kennels, cat condos, and runs after patient discharge, following hospital protocols.
• Empty trash, recycling, and laundry bins, and move waste to designated collection areas.
• Clean the break room and staff kitchen, including sinks, counters, microwave, and refrigerator surfaces.
• Wash, dry, and fold clinic laundry (towels, blankets, and bedding) when needed.
  
  

Weekly

• Deep clean floors and baseboards in patient-care areas, and spot-clean walls and doors.
• Dust vents, shelves, and equipment exteriors that are safe for non-clinical staff to clean.
• Clean windows, mirrors, and interior glass.
• Sanitize and organize the janitorial closet, and log supply levels.
  
  

Monthly and as needed

• Strip and wax or seal floors on the schedule set by management.
• Clean outdoor entrances, patios, and parking-lot walkways.
• Respond promptly to accidents and spills, including vomit, urine, feces, and blood.
• Report maintenance issues, pest sightings, and damaged equipment to the manager on duty.
  
  

Infection control and safety

In a veterinary hospital, cleaning is part of patient care, so the janitor follows infection-control and safety protocols exactly as trained.

• Use the correct hospital-grade disinfectants at the correct dilution and contact time, and never mix chemicals.
• Wear required PPE (gloves, masks, eye protection, and shoe covers or boots) and change it between isolation and general areas.
• Follow isolation-ward protocols, including cleaning order and dedicated equipment, for animals with contagious disease.
• Handle biohazard, sharps-adjacent, and pharmaceutical waste only as trained, and report any sharps or spills to clinical staff rather than clearing them alone.
• Keep Safety Data Sheets accessible, label all secondary containers, and complete required OSHA hazard communication training.
• Use wet-floor signage, and store cleaning tools and chemicals in locked or designated areas away from animals and the public.
• Clean surgery and radiology only when the space is not in use and as trained, and stay out of controlled-substance storage entirely.
• Report injuries, bites, scratches, and chemical exposures to a manager immediately.
  
  

Qualifications

The right candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working around animals, with no formal degree required.

Required

• Ability to work independently and manage time across a full cleaning checklist.
• Ability to read and follow product labels, Safety Data Sheets, and written cleaning protocols.
• Comfort around dogs, cats, and other animals, including anxious or reactive patients.
• Reliable transportation and a consistent attendance record.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and any NVA onboarding requirements.
  
  

Preferred

• One or more years of janitorial, housekeeping, or facilities experience, ideally in a medical, veterinary, or kennel setting.
• Familiarity with infection-control and biohazard practices.
• Basic English communication skills to coordinate with staff; bilingual skills are a plus.

Physical requirements and work environment

This is an active, on-your-feet role in a working animal hospital, so candidates should be comfortable with the physical demands and sensory realities below.

• Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach for most of a shift.
• Lift and carry up to 50 pounds (trash bags, laundry, supply cases), with proper technique and help for heavier items.
• Push and pull mop buckets, floor machines, and laundry carts.
• Work around animal odors, noise from barking, fur, dander, and bodily fluids.
• Work with cleaning chemicals and disinfectants, with PPE and ventilation provided.
• Occasional exposure to animals that may be frightened, fractious, or contagious; animal-handling is not part of this role, and staff will manage patients.
• Work indoors year-round, with some outdoor tasks in Northern Nevada weather.

Schedule

Our hospital is open seven days a week. We are hiring for full-time or part-time evening hours, 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with weekend coverage included. Holidays as needed.

Compensation
