Substitute Nutrition Services Assistant

DEFINITION:
Under general supervision of the Director of Nutrition Services, to prepare, cook, and serve foods and baked goods, operate Point of Sale; assist in the cleaning of the kitchen, serving area, and food service utensils and equipment; and to do other job-related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTIC
The distinction of this classification for the Nutrition Service Assistant is that the work assigned to this incumbent includes basic and routine food preparation serving and routine cleaning. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:

1. Participates in serving of food;
2. assists in the preparation of foods;
3. assists in maintaining the food service facility in a safe, clean, and sanitary condition;
4. prepares food items which may include scratch cooking;
5. preparation, and clean up of salad bar and other serving areas;
6. may restock food and  supplies as needed;
7. assists in maintaining daily site usage records, reference menu production worksheets;
8. washes and stores utensils, containers, and trays;
9. follows oral and written instructions;
10. performs other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:

• methods and procedures for preparing and serving food in large quantities;
• standard food service terminology, appliances, and equipment;
• sanitation and safety practices and procedures;
• basic arithmetical calculations and measurement processes.

Ability to:

• adhere to standard menus and recipes in the preparation of foods and baked goods;
• operate and maintain food service-related equipment;
• work efficiently and effectively;
• understand and carry out oral and written directions;
• establish and maintain cooperative working relationships;
• meet the physical, mental, and environmental demands of the position.

Education, Training, and Experience:

• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by training in food preparation, safety, sanitation, or other job-related areas.

License Required:

• Valid Food Handlers Card issued for Riverside County.

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

• Heavy work, i.e. pushing, and/or pulling up to approximately 50 pounds;
• the job may call for lifting and/or carrying up to 50 pounds with assistance;
• with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds;
• work requires standing and walking for prolonged periods.
