Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, Corporate with dotted line to the Assistant General Counsel, Potash, the Legal Counsel Corporate & Potash, will provide legal support and strategic advice on a wide variety of commercial matters supporting corporate functions and the Potash business unit. This position also provides strategic advice and counsel to procurement and Potash operations regarding procurement matters to advance business priorities and appropriately manage risk.
This position is located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
What you will do:
- Provides Corporate functions (including IT, Tax, Treasury, Finance, Brand and Communications, Risk and Sustainability) and Potash business unit with legal advice on a broad range of matters necessary to the business including review, negotiation and drafting of various commercial agreements
- Provides legal support in respect to Potash operations matters including procurement of goods and services, non-disclosure agreements, technology and intellectual property, mining and construction as well as capital projects, in alignment with Nutrien’s business plan
- Responds in a timely manner to day-to-day procurement related inquiries, including advice on Nutrien template terms and conditions and contract review and negotiation as well as supporting on procurement policies process and initiatives
- Contributes legal assistance and advice to IT and corporate procurement and other corporate functions as requested
- Supports on disclosure and regulatory reporting issues, environmental, safety and sustainability matters, and related communications as needed
- Assists in retaining and managing external counsel as necessary and
- Complies with all Company standards, policies and procedures pertaining to appropriate conduct for employees, including the Statement of Core Values and Code of Business Conduct; the Respect in the Workplace Policy; Safety, Health and Environment Policies; and any other applicable standards, policies and procedures as implemented and/or revised by the Company or by legislation.
What you will bring:
- A law degree and be a member of or eligible for membership in the Law Society of Alberta or Law Society of Saskatchewan
- 5-7 years of post-bar call commercial legal experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated experience as a solicitor in corporate, energy, securities or commercial work
- Specific experience with intellectual property, IT, cybersecurity and software contracts and/or procurement and good and services contracts is highly desired
- Thorough written and verbal negotiation and communication skills
- Able to collaborate with a variety of people and job functions within the organization internally and externally to impact and develop consensus across different internal business segments and groups
- Excellent guidance, demonstrated choice making and facilitation skills
- A results orientated business partner able to identify legal risks and provide risk adjusted advice and solutions to advance business targets
- Self-directed and motivated with the ability to handle multiple and varied legal projects simultaneously including with competing deadlines
- Able to efficiently care for and coordinate with external counsel
- Willingness to engage in some travel when necessary
- Possess a high degree of professionalism, business judgment and unquestioned personal ethics, integrity and responsibility and
- Exceptional interpersonal, critical thinking, problem-solving, time management and organizational skills, with thorough attention to detail
