SALARY/RATE: $30 per hour for all hours worked

GENERAL SUMMARY
The School Nurse Substitute works in the absence of a fulltime School Nurse or as required by Lead Nurse. The substitute is a licensed nurse working within the school setting to support and enhance the educational process by promoting, protecting, and improving the health and well-being of students. The School Nurse assists in implementing and maintaining the school health program in collaboration with the Lead Nurse and school administration.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Lead Nurse in collecting and reviewing student health histories and notifying teachers of Emergency Action Plans (EAPs).
- Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential student health records using electronic medical record systems and paper documentation, in compliance with applicable privacy laws.
- Assist in obtaining and maintaining student immunization records; prepare South Carolina Certificates of Immunization when appropriate documentation is provided; make referrals to physicians and/or the Department of Public Health (DPH) as necessary; and prepare required DPH immunization reports.
- Support the daily operation of the school health room by assessing and managing ill or injured students on a walk-in basis and responding to medical emergencies.
- Notify parents/guardians and physicians, as appropriate, when medical attention is required; activate emergency medical services (EMS) when necessary.
- Participate in South Carolina DPH-recommended school screening programs; maintain screening logs; determine the need for further medical evaluation; provide referrals; and conduct follow-up as needed.
- Administer prescription and non-prescription medications in accordance with physician orders and parental authorization, following school and state guidelines.
- Assist in identifying and reporting suspected child abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect in accordance with mandated reporting laws.
- Maintain inventory of health room supplies and equipment; notify the Lead Nurse of needed materials and replacements.
- Inspect, maintain, and ensure readiness of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and emergency medical supplies.
- Compile data for the Lead Nurse to support preparation of reports and documentation required by the school, district, and regulatory agencies.
- Remain current with professional standards and best practices by attending trainings, workshops, conferences, and continuing education opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Lead Nurse.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Associate Degree in Nursing (ASN – 2 year degree) or equivalent
Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of South Carolina
Experience: Two years of nursing experience preferably in a school environment (Pediatric, emergency room, and/or public health plus)
Skills/Efforts: Knowledge in preventative health, health assessments, school screenings and referral procedures. Knowledge of Microsoft, communication (both written and verbal), organization and medical resources
Working Conditions: Office environment with moderate exposure to outside conditions. Office
activities require movement/lifting items weighing up to 120 pounds.
