What are the responsibilities and job description for the Financial Controller position at Numero?
This is a remote position for Southern California based candidates only.
Overview
At Numero, we build software for political campaigns and nonprofits. Our platform is an all-in-one system comprised of a donor CRM, a broadcast email/text tool, and payment processing pages that our clients rely on for their work every day.
This is a pivotal role. You'll take the reins on the day-to-day: owning our monthly close, financial reporting, forecasting, billing, and compliance. Just as importantly, this is an AI-forward role - a meaningful part of our finance work already runs through AI-driven workflows and agents, and you'll run them, improve them, build new ones, and own the judgment layer that keeps them honest. In joining our small but mighty team, you'll help shape how a modern finance function actually works - come join us!
Who we're looking for
We're looking for an experienced finance professional who is equal parts rigorous accountant and curious builder, with the following skills / qualifications:
- 4 years of progressive accounting / finance experience, including ownership of month-end close and financial statements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA required
- Solid technical accounting foundation and working knowledge of US GAAP
- General fluency with AI tools and real excitement about applying them (or learning to apply them) to finance — you can point to automations, prompts, or AI-assisted workflows you've used or built
- Strong attention to detail - you catch the number that's off, including when an AI produced it
- Excellent written and verbal communication - you'll answer internal and external (client) questions directly and clearly
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment with strong self-motivation
- Professional demeanor and sound judgment when handling sensitive financial matters
- Located in Southern California and willing to travel 1-2x a year for company retreats and/or team offsites (usually held in California)
Nice to have
- Experience at a public accounting firm
- Experience with usage-based / subscription SaaS revenue recognition
- Hands-on experience building or maintaining AI agents, automations, or no-code/low-code workflows
- Familiarity with any of our tools: Claude, QuickBooks, Stripe, PayPal, Excel, Google Workspace, Monday.com, HubSpot, PandaDoc, Help Scout.
What you'll be working on
As our Financial Controller, you'll own the day-to-day finance function end to end. Here are some of the areas and responsibilities you'll take on:
Month-End Close & Financial Reporting (Primary Focus)
- Own the monthly close — journal entries, accruals, prepaids, deferred revenue, and account reconciliations
- Produce accurate, timely financial statements and management reporting
- Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts, and keep our books audit-ready
- Maintain internal controls and documentation appropriate to a growing SaaS business
FP&A & Forecasting
- Own the revenue forecast, budget, and variance (flux) analysis
- Track our SaaS metrics — MRR/ARR, net new revenue, churn, LTV/CAC, and gross margin
- Prepare analysis that supports founder and investor conversations
Billing, Accounts Receivable & Cash
- Oversee client billing across our products, including complex usage-based texting (MMS/SMS) billing
- Own AR and collections against net 10-day payment terms and keep cash collection healthy
- Reconcile payments across Stripe and QuickBooks
Payroll, Tax & Compliance
- Run / oversee payroll and related accruals
- Coordinate sales and income tax filings, audit support, and entity / GAAP compliance with our outside advisors
AI & Automation (What Makes This Role Different)
- Run the AI workflows that already power our AR dunning, MRR rollforward, reconciliations, and billing / fee analyses — and review their output for accuracy
- Build and improve automations: design new AI-driven workflows, refine prompts and logic, and automate the repetitive work
- Own the judgment layer — catch where AI gets numbers, mappings, or logic wrong, maintain controls, and sign off before anything goes out
- Research, test, and recommend new AI tools and connectors for our finance stack
What we value
Here are some of the concepts that we value as a team and hope resonate for you:
Owner's Mindset. You treat the finance function like it's yours. You don't wait to be told — you see what needs doing, get it done, and make it better the next time around.
AI-Forward. You're genuinely excited about using AI to do great work, and equally clear-eyed about its limits. You know when to trust the machine and when to check it by hand.
Rigorous. You care about getting the number right. You tie things out, you document your work, and you'd rather find the error yourself than have someone else find it later.
Strong Communicator. You write clear, professional emails and can explain a variance or a billing question to someone who isn't in finance — including firm-but-friendly conversations about money.
Flexible Adaptable. You're comfortable with ambiguity and changing priorities. In a startup environment, responsibilities evolve — and you're excited about that, not frustrated by it.
