Basic Job Functions:

The Lab Technician is is responsible for the preparation, testing, verification, and documentation of material test specimens to support compliance with customer, industry, and regulatory requirements. This position performs tensile and Charpy impact testing in accordance with applicable ASTM standards, prepares test specimens, verifies material documentation, and maintains accurate testing records. The technician may also operate CNC equipment used for machining test specimens and assist in maintaining laboratory equipment and work areas.

Mechanical Testing

  • Conduct mechanical testing activities, including tensile and Charpy V-Notch impact testing, in accordance with applicable ASTM standards and customer specifications.
  • Operate and utilize laboratory testing equipment to generate accurate and reliable material property data.
  • Analyze and interpret test results to verify compliance with applicable material requirements and specifications.
  • Support retesting activities when required by industry standards, customer requirements, or internal quality processes.
  • Contribute to the overall effectiveness and accuracy of laboratory testing operations.

Sample Preparation

  • Prepare and process material samples and test specimens for mechanical testing activities.
  • Utilize cutting, machining, milling, saw, and CNC equipment as needed to produce test specimens.
  • Verify specimen configuration, dimensions, and orientation to ensure compliance with applicable testing requirements.
  • Maintain material identification and traceability throughout the testing and reporting process.
  • Support efficient workflow and timely completion of laboratory testing requests.

Documentation and Data Management

  • Accurately record, maintain, and manage testing data within electronic databases and quality management systems.
  • Prepare and review laboratory reports, test records, and supporting documentation.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing, industrial, quality, laboratory, machining, or other technical environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, drawings, procedures, and test documentation.
  • Basic computer proficiency and data entry skills.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to lift, move, push, or pull materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work safely in an industrial laboratory environment and wear required PPE.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to safely operate equipment and tools.
  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Materials Science, Metallurgy, Industrial Technology, or a related field.
  • Experience performing mechanical testing in a manufacturing, quality, or laboratory environment.
  • Experience operating tensile testing machines and Charpy impact testing equipment.
  • Experience operating CNC mills, lathes, or other machining equipment.
  • Knowledge of steel manufacturing, fabrication, or metallurgical testing processes.
  • Working knowledge of ASTM standards, including ASTM A370, ASTM E8, ASTM E23, ASTM A673, and related material specifications.
  • Experience reviewing Material Test Reports (MTRs) and compliance documentation.
  • Experience working within ISO 9001 or similar quality management systems.
