Position Summary
The OSP Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing construction equipment used in Outside Plant (OSP) telecommunications operations. This includes drill rigs, trenching equipment, vac trucks, heavy equipment, and support vehicles. The OSP Mechanic ensures all equipment is safe, operational, and serviced according to company standards and manufacturer guidelines.
Knowledge of Ditch Witch directional drills is strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance & Repair
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on OSP construction equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues on drill rigs, vac trucks, trenchers, excavators, skid steers, and support vehicles.
- Troubleshoot and repair Ditch Witch and Vermeer drills, mud systems, and tracking equipment (experience preferred).
- Complete maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, lubrication, and part replacements.
- Ensure all equipment meets safety and operational standards before returning to service.
Diagnostics & Troubleshooting
- Identify equipment failures and determine appropriate repair methods.
- Use diagnostic tools, schematics, and manuals to troubleshoot complex issues.
- Document findings and communicate repair needs to supervisors.
Shop & Field Support
- Perform repairs both in the shop and on job sites as needed.
- Support field crews with equipment breakdowns and emergency repairs.
- Assist with equipment setup, rig inspections, and job readiness checks.
Compliance & Documentation
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs, repair records, and equipment reports.
- Ensure all work complies with OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards.
- Conduct equipment inspections in accordance with company policies.
Parts & Inventory
- Identify required parts and assist with ordering components for repairs.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and shop work areas in a clean and organized manner.
- Track usage of materials and replacement parts.
Required Qualifications
Experience
- 3–5 years of experience as a mechanic working with heavy equipment, diesel engines, or construction machinery.
- Experience with OSP telecom equipment or underground construction equipment preferred.
- Experience with Ditch Witch drills preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Ability to read schematics, service manuals, and diagnostic charts.
- Skilled in diagnosing equipment failures and performing efficient repairs.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple repair tasks.
- Strong problem‑solving, communication, and time‑management skills.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid driver’s license required (Class A CDL preferred).
- Mechanical certifications (ASE, equipment repair, hydraulics) preferred.
- Ability to complete company-required safety and technical training.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50–100 lbs regularly.
- Work in shop and outdoor environments in various weather conditions.
- Ability to bend, crouch, climb, and work in tight spaces.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and operate tools/equipment safely.
Work Environment
- Shop and job-site settings with exposure to heavy equipment, tools, noise, and outdoor conditions.
- Travel to field locations in service truck for on‑site repairs.
