Company Description
NSSI is a fully-permitted RCRA Part B hazardous waste TSDF facility, with operations in handling and processing mixed hazardous and radioactive wastes. Established in 1971, it is one of only three facilities in the U.S. allowed to store and treat these materials. Located in Texas, NSSI is licensed to accept all radionuclides, including special nuclear material, and a comprehensive range of EPA-designated waste codes. The organization operates under the strict regulatory authority of the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role for a Radiation Technician II, based in Houston, TX. The individual will be responsible for assisting with activities involving the safe use, storage, handling, transportation, and disposal of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment. This role works alongside the Radiological Team to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Pay Type/Range
Non-exempt, $35-$40 per hour
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain technical expertise in nuclear instrument applications related to nuclear density, nuclear level, density profiling, neutron backscatter, gamma backscatter, wireline logging, radioactive tracers
- Coordinate and perform nuclear gauge services including but not limited to source head repair, shutter repair, electronics diagnostics and repair, refurbishment, disposal, field services, pipe changes
- Maintain, monitor, and perform site area wipe, survey, and air monitoring program
- Receive nuclear material shipments in accordance with site procedures
- Generate receipt documents for both domestic and international shipments made to the facility
- Assist RSO in fulfilling regulatory reporting issues
- Travel to customer sites to perform field services including but not limited to surveys, sampling, packaging, and transportation of radioactive material
- Perform any necessary remediation services at NSSI facilities, or other locations where NSSI may be contracted to remediate.
- Look to open new streams of revenue for NSSI, especially for field or remediation services.
- Ensure compliance with NRC, DSHS, OSHA, DOT, TCEQ, and EPA regulations.
- Facilitate profiling and outbound radioactive waste loads to the Texas Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility with coordination with NSSI’s Radiological Operations team.
- Assist in developing and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for radiological operations.
- Manage inventory and maintain accurate records of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices.
- Assist in audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews.
- Investigate incidents, exposures, or safety concerns and implement corrective/preventive actions.
- Support emergency preparedness and response activities involving radiological hazards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Radiological Science, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum 5 years of experience in radiological operations, radiation safety, or nuclear facility management.
- Strong knowledge of NRC/Agreement State regulations, DOT hazardous materials transport requirements, and radiation safety principles.
- Experience with radioactive waste handling and disposal methods.
- Experience with facility decommissioning and site decontamination.
- Ability to work in both office and field environments, including potentially hazardous conditions.
- Professional certifications (e.g., CHP, NRRPT) preferred.
Working Conditions
- Office, laboratory, and field settings with exposure to radiological materials and PPE requirements.
- May require travel to project sites, regulatory meetings, and training events.
- Must be able to participate in emergency response activities, including after-hours support if needed.
