What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Novo Advisors?
Summary
Reporting to the Managing Partner, the Controller is responsible for working to ensure that all Company accounting and financial processes and controls produce accurate results, are in legal compliance and in accordance with best accounting practices. This position will also coordinate with the external accounting firm as needed for audits and tax preparation matters. This is a fractional Controller role with an estimated time commitment of 25 hours per week (on average).
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the activity, accuracy, and effectiveness of the general ledger accounting functions.
- Perform month-end closing functions, including posting of adjusting journal entries and analysis/reconciliation of balance sheet and profit/loss accounts.
- Review bank statements and perform cash management activities to optimize Company cash flow.
- Compile financial information to create monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements.
- Assist the Managing Partner with analysis for important financial decisions.
- Develop strong relationships with Company personnel to provide support and information sharing on a regular basis as appropriate.
- Assist in the preparation of budgets, reviews, updates, and analysis including the annual business plan, projections, and special project analysis.
- Oversee all A/R and A/P processes/procedures.
- Oversee all payroll and employee expense reimbursement matters.
- Prepare bank reconciliations and cash-flow projections.
- Assist external accounting firm with tax preparation activities.
- Provide support for annual audits.
- Oversee the management and annual audit of the Company’s Cash Balance and 401(k) Plans, coordinating with third party administrators as required.
- Other projects as assigned.
Qualifications/Related Experience
- Minimum education requirements – Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance. MBA and/or CPA certification a plus.
- 5 years of experience as a staff accountant or controller, with prior experience in the financial services or legal industry a plus.
- Strong knowledge of accounting systems and financial controls, generally accepted accounting principles, payroll, and budgeting.
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Proficient in QuickBooks and Paychex.
- Excellent Excel skills in spreadsheet, database application required (V-lookups, Pivot Tables, & Macros).
- Prior experience administering 401(k), Cash Balance, or other retirement plans preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience, including coaching and developing direct reports, is preferred.

Oversee A/R, A/P and payroll functions, and serve as a liaison with the Company’s Executive Assistant, HR Director, and Partners.

Talking and listening required for answering telephones and conversing personally with the public and staff. Manual dexterity required for accessing filing cabinets in various locations.

Compensation
The hourly rate for this position is $75.
