What are the responsibilities and job description for the Commissioning Technician (Solar Energy) position at Novel Energy Solutions?
The Commissioning Technician supports the commissioning department through various activities in the field and office for all solar construction projects. This position will involve traveling to different Solar sites in Maine.
What You'll Do:
- Perform inspections of projects as installation progresses to identify and issues and ensure compliance with company standards.
- Ensure the timely completion of all required commissioning documentation as installation progresses and review all documentation for completeness and conformance with customers standards.
- Review equipment manufacturers documentation, product data sheets, and engineering documents to ensure compliance.
- Verify components for data acquisition (SCADA), control, and performance monitoring systems.
- Maintain detailed commissioning logs and equipment checklists.
- Oversee the installation of all project data acquisition, control, and performance monitoring systems.
- Assist with energizing, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of completed projects.
- Assist with utility required inspections and witness testing.
- Participate in daily and weekly progress meetings to ensure projects are on track and priorities are aligned.
- This position supports the Construction teams and works with site supervisors, subcontractors, and personnel from all departments.

- Familiar with computers and test equipment i.e. Thermal imaging and curve trace testing
What You'll Need:
- Understanding and experience with testing required prior & post utility interconnection such as VOC, VLF, IV curve tracing, ground resistance, and insulation resistance testing.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, structural, and civil drawings packages.
- Applicants should have experience in construction, including electrical experience, and a thorough understanding of the solar construction processes and architecture.
- Experience with commercial solar PV system commissioning and testing processes and equipment.
- NABCEP certification or the ability to obtain such certification is strongly preferred but not required.
- 4 years working experience with the construction, quality, commissioning, or O&M of commercial solar PV systems.
- Working familiarity with the applicable sections of the National Electrical Code and other local and national building codes and standards.
- Proficiency in utilizing Thermal Imaging tools and software to photograph and commission electrical equipment and conductors.
- Ability to work under pressure while maintaining a positive and helpful attitude.
Bonus Points:
- Knowledge of PV systems including AC and DC components.
- Must be very detail oriented and able to effectively manage multiple project commitments.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Procore, MS Excel, Word and Outlook.
- Ability to travel locally and regionally up to 75% of the time.
- Must possess current driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Electrician License (Journeyman or higher)
- Trained and certified in maintenance and repair on components such as tracker systems, inverters, combiners, and DAS equipment.
- Working knowledge of National Electrical Code , and NFPA 70E.
- Minimum of two (5) years of electrical experience, including NFPA 70E electrical training and a thorough understanding of electrical hazards
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret plan sets and one-line & 3-line diagrams as they pertain to PV solar installations.
- Experience with configuring and troubleshooting industrial communication equipment such as SCADA & DAS equipment, Ethernet routers and switches, MODBUS RS-485, etc.
- Experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems a plus.
- OSHA 30; NABCEP PV Installer certification; medium voltage experience.
