Build Your Career in SOX & Internal Audit
Our client is a publicly traded global organization seeking a Sr. Internal Auditor to join its Internal Audit team. This is a hands-on opportunity for an auditor who wants meaningful ownership across the SOX compliance lifecycle, from planning, risk assessment and scoping through walkthroughs, control documentation, testing, remediation, and reporting. You'll work directly with process owners through Accounting, Financial Reporting, Finance, HR, Operations, and IT while developing deeper experience with SOX, internal controls over financial reporting, business process controls, ITGCs, and enterprise-wide audit execution.Position SummaryReporting to the Director, Internal Audit, the Sr. Internal Auditor will play a hands-on role in the execution of the organization's SOX compliance and internal audit program. This position will support SOX planning, risk assessment, scoping, business process walkthroughs, control narratives and flowcharts, risk and control documentation, testing of key SOX controls, ITGC and application control testing, deficiency identification, remediation follow-up, and reporting.Essential ResponsibilitiesSOX Planning, Risk Assessment & Scoping
  • Support annual and ongoing SOX planning and risk assessment activities.
  • Assist with risk-based scoping, including identifying relevant business processes, financial reporting risks, key controls, and testing requirements.
  • Help define audit scope, objectives, testing procedures, and documentation requirements.
  • Evaluate business processes and control environments to identify risks, control gaps, and areas requiring additional audit attention.
Business Process Walkthroughs & Control Documentation
  • Conduct SOX walkthroughs with process and control owners across Accounting, Financial Reporting, Finance, HR, Operations, IT, and other functions.
  • Document business processes, key risks, control activities, roles and responsibilities, systems, and supporting evidence.
  • Develop control and process narratives, flowcharts, risk and control matrices, and workpapers.
  • Evaluate control design and identify gaps identified through walkthroughs and documentation.
SOX Control Testing
  • Execute testing across accounting, financial reporting, finance, human resources, operational, and entity-level controls, as applicable.
  • Develop testing procedures, select and evaluate evidence, document results, and reach well-supported conclusions.
  • Prepare complete and accurate workpapers supporting management and external audit review.
ITGC & Application Controls
  • Perform or support testing across ITGC areas and evaluate evidence supporting control execution.
  • Coordinate with IT and business process owners to obtain documentation, understand control execution, and resolve testing questions.
Control Deficiencies & Remediation
  • Identify and clearly document control exceptions and deficiencies arising from SOX testing.
  • Evaluate findings in coordination with Internal Audit leadership and process owners.
  • Communicate control issues and supporting evidence clearly and professionally.
  • Follow up with control and process owners to track remediation and validate corrective actions.
Audit Reporting & Stakeholder Partnership
  • Partner with control owners and business leaders throughout walkthroughs, testing, issue resolution, and remediation.
  • Assist with quarterly and other reporting requirements to the Audit Committee.
  • Support coordination with external auditors, including walkthroughs, documentation requests, testing support, and follow-up questions as applicable.

What We're Looking ForWe're looking for a SOX-focused auditor, not solely an operational or process-improvement auditor. Strong candidates should be comfortable explaining not only what a control does, but what risk it mitigates, how it should be tested, what evidence supports its operation, and how the conclusion should be documented.Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • 4 years of internal audit, SOX compliance, or equivalent public accounting experience.
  • Hands-on experience with SOX 404 compliance and internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Experience with SOX planning, risk assessment, and audit scoping.
  • Experience conducting business process walkthroughs with process and control owners.
  • Experience developing or maintaining control narratives, process narratives, flowcharts, RCMs, audit programs, and workpapers.
  • Hands-on experience performing design and operating effectiveness testing of key SOX controls.
  • Experience identifying and documenting control exceptions, deficiencies, and remediation activities.
  • Experience producing clear, review-ready SOX and audit documentation.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP and/or IFRS and internal control concepts.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written communication, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to independently manage assigned testing and documentation with limited supervision.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with IT General Controls and application controls.
  • Experience working within a publicly traded company or public accounting environment.
  • Experience interacting with or supporting external auditors during the SOX cycle.
  • Familiarity with COSO and its application to internal control evaluation.
  • CPA certification or active progress toward certification.
  • Manufacturing, industrial, engineering, construction, energy, or oil & gas industry experience.
  • Experience with Excel, Visio, process mapping, ERP systems, and audit documentation tools.

Supervision & Professional DevelopmentThis position reports directly to the Director of Internal Audit and does not currently have direct supervisory responsibilities. The role provides broad exposure across global operations and functional teams while offering hands-on experience throughout the SOX and internal audit lifecycle.

For an auditor looking to deepen their expertise in SOX compliance, ICFR, risk assessment, audit scoping, business process walkthroughs, control documentation, control narratives, SOX testing, ITGCs, control deficiencies, and remediation, this role offers the opportunity to take meaningful ownership within a global public company environment.
