NOVA Community Services is seeking compassionate, skilled, and dependable Qualified Mental Health Professionals (QMHPs) to join our new Youth Crisis Center serving children and adolescents experiencing behavioral health crises.
This is a unique opportunity to be part of a team that provides immediate crisis intervention, stabilization, assessment, and support to youth and families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
Please Note: This position is located within a Youth Crisis Center. Staff work in a fast-paced behavioral health environment alongside nurses, licensed clinicians, and psychiatric providers. Applicants must be comfortable working with children and adolescents experiencing acute mental health and behavioral health crises, including suicidal ideation, self-harm behaviors, aggression, severe emotional distress, psychosis, and other psychiatric emergencies.

Position Summary
The QMHP provides direct crisis intervention, behavioral health support, observation, and care coordination for youth receiving services within the Crisis Receiving Center. Working collaboratively with nurses, licensed clinicians, and psychiatric providers, the QMHP helps stabilize clients, assists with assessments, supports treatment planning, and coordinates discharge planning and community referrals.
This position requires excellent clinical judgment, compassion, strong communication skills, and the ability to remain calm in high-stress situations.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervision, support, and therapeutic engagement to youth receiving crisis stabilization services.
- Build rapport with clients and families while maintaining a calm, safe, and therapeutic environment.
- Utilize trauma-informed care and verbal de-escalation techniques to assist youth experiencing behavioral health crises.
- Participate in client assessments and provide clinical observations to licensed clinicians and psychiatric providers.
- Monitor client behavior and document changes in mental status, mood, functioning, and safety concerns.
- Complete clinical documentation accurately and within required timeframes.
- Assist with safety planning and discharge planning.
- Coordinate referrals and connect clients and families with appropriate community resources and follow-up services.
- Collaborate with Mobile Crisis teams, hospitals, schools, Community Services Boards (CSBs), outpatient providers, and other community partners.
- Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment for all clients.
- Follow all DBHDS regulations, HIPAA requirements, agency policies, and safety procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QualificationsRequired
- Must currently hold an active Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) certification issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia at the time of application.
- Must not have any barrier crimes which would prevent employment with the state of Virginia requirements.
- Must successfully pass background, central registry and OIG checks.
- Bachelor's degree in a human services field or otherwise meet Virginia QMHP requirements.
- Experience working with children and adolescents experiencing behavioral health challenges.
- Strong crisis intervention and verbal de-escalation skills.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to complete clinical documentation accurately and efficiently.
- Reliable transportation and dependable attendance.
- Ability to begin employment immediately or within a very short notice period.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
