General Definition and Conditions of Work:
Performs responsible semiskilled work in the regular operation of medium automotive and construction equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, peripheral vision, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
- Operating equipment in the collection of solid waste and operating the County Landfill.
- Operates special purpose vehicle for the removal of solid waste from collection points throughout county.
- Drives and operates special purpose vehicle removing solid waste from collection points and emptying in county landfill.
- Operates front end loader excavating trenches and covering trash at county landfill.
- Performs manual duties cleaning area around collection points.
- Cleans, scrapes and paints trash containers as needed.
- Performs minor equipment maintenance in accordance with established rules.
- Cleans vehicle on inside and outside.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of operating medium construction equipment; thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in operation and maintenance of motorized equipment.
Special Requirements
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Pay: $15.00 - $18.63 per hour
