GENERAL DESCRIPTION
- The Car Driver is responsible for the safe, efficient, and timely transportation of students to and from school, as well as to approved extracurricular activities and field trips. The position requires adherence to all federal, state, and local traffic laws, as well as school division policies to ensure the highest standards of safety and professionalism.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED certificate.
- At least two professional references attesting to ability, character, and personal qualifications.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Meet all state and local requirements for physical examinations, background checks, and driver record reviews.
- Ability to operate all vehicles used in student transportation safely and effectively.
- Ability to communicate clearly using radio or other communication devices.
- Must be dependable, punctual, and capable of exercising sound judgment in a variety of driving and emergency situations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Safely transport students to and from school, according to established routes and time schedules.
- Ensure student safety during loading, transport, and unloading, including assisting special needs students as necessary.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle, reporting any defects or maintenance needs.
- Operate assigned vehicles over designated routes according to established schedules and pick-up/drop-off points.
- Maintain order and enforce student safety rules while driving and during loading/unloading.
- Respond appropriately to accidents, breakdowns, or other emergencies.
- Report all vehicle accidents, incidents, and student injuries immediately to the Supervisor of Transportation or designated authority.
- Maintain vehicle cleanliness inside and out.
- Monitor gauges, fuel levels, and vehicle performance; report any irregularities.
- Communicate effectively with the Transportation Supervisor, school staff, and parents as needed.
- Maintain accurate trip, mileage, and incident records.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with all applicable traffic laws and school division policies.
- Exercise patience and good judgment when managing student behavior.
- Attend required safety meetings, training sessions, and driver workshops.
- Report absences in a timely manner to allow for substitute coverage.
- Establish cooperative relationships with other drivers, mechanics, administrators, teachers, and students.
- Demonstrate knowledge of state and county vehicle laws, transportation policies, and safety regulations.
- Comply with the division’s dress code and standards of conduct.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation or designee.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must meet all physical, vision, and hearing requirements for drivers as set forth by state and local regulations.
- Ability to sit for extended periods and operate a vehicle safely under varying traffic and weather conditions.
- Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds when assisting students or handling equipment.
- Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching while performing pre-trip inspections and vehicle cleaning.

REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 18 years of age.
