Preceptors Occupational Therapy Clinical Experiences

The registered and licensed occupational therapy (OT) preceptor serves as a liaison between the Academic Fieldwork Coordinator (AFWC), and the Occupational Therapy Doctoral (OTD) students. The preceptor will provide hands-on supervision, clinical support, and mentoring to occupational therapy students participating in fieldwork experiences, including Level I and other community initiatives. Duties include independently solving complex problems related to students’ communication, adapting and modifying treatment plans, activities, and procedures to meet the needs of clients/community partners/patients with complex disabilities. Additionally, the preceptor will provide support for the overall development of the critical and clinical thinking skills of the occupational therapy students. 

 

The licensed OT preceptor serves as a subject matter expert for the OTD students during experiential placements. During the duration of the Occupational Therapy program, students are assigned to clinical and community experiences in all practice areas, including Mental Health, Physical Disabilities, Neurorehabilitation, Pediatrics and Emerging Practice areas. As a member of the occupational therapy department, the preceptor is responsible for supervising and ensuring compliance with professional behaviors and safety standards while working with OTD students. The preceptor demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF-4), theories, models and frames of reference and their proper application using occupation-based rehabilitation protocols. The preceptor follows established curricular guidelines, professional ethics, and the mission of the Occupational Therapy program. The preceptor will assist and guide students in modifying techniques and developing interventions as necessary to ensure the success of the client, patient, or community partner treatment goals. 

 

The preceptor employs both standard and non-standard methods and techniques to evaluate and interpret a wide variety of students' approaches to addressing the physical and psychosocial functional levels of their clients, patients, or community partners, providing progressive treatment rationales.

 

The preceptor will: 

  • Conducts regular clinical site visits
  • Investigates and in conjunction with the AFWC resolves conflicts with students and /or clinical sites

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's or Doctoral degree in occupational therapy.
  • Occupational Therapist certification and license to practice in the state of MD.
  • Must have at least 2 years of clinical practice experience as an occupational therapist.
  • Must complete a Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) –background check.
  • Demonstrated experience making sound decisions that affect a work unit or team.
  • Demonstrated experience requiring diverse problem-solving methods in a variety of situations.
