Position Reports to: Facilities Manager for Maintenance & Operations


  1. Basic Function
  • Makes complex problem diagnoses. Independently handles complex problems requiring advanced training and extensive experience. Uses sophisticated diagnostic methods and innovative repair techniques.
  • Maintenance Carpenters are skilled tradespeople who carry out all-around maintenance. This includes tasks such as: fit out and de-fit out projects, repairs to building facades and interiors, patching, replacing doors, and related ad-hoc maintenance.
  • Under general supervision, perform skilled work in construction, alteration, repair, and installation of fixtures, buildings and structures throughout the campus. Maintain campus structures and furniture in attractive and safe condition.


  1. Essential Functions
  1. Plan, calculate, layout and perform both rough and finished carpentry work, install suspended ceilings, flooring, scaffolding, cabinets, stairways, furniture repair, etc. 
  2. Carry out work assignments from an interpretation of drawings, sketches, layouts, manufacturer’s catalogues and associate oral and/or written information.
  3. Draw materials for shop use or transport them to and from work areas.
  4. Measure and lay out the work to be performed, calculating such dimensions as angle of incline, tread width and riser height for stairways; calculate, measure and mark off proper spacing for studding, joists, etc., by use of level and square. Allow and compensate for, out square and out plumb conditions in the construction of additions and alterations. 
  5. Perform rough carpentry work such as construct wood forms, shipping boxes, protective sheds, staging platforms, scaffolding, flooring, office partitions, door and window casings, etc.
  6. Perform such finished carpentry work as layout and construct or install benches, cabinets, window and door screens, glass and plexiglass windows, shelving, suspended ceilings, stairways and the repair of furniture found in University. Cut, fit and install paneling and decorative molding and trim work, assuring the proper fit of all joints in achieving the desired appearance. 
  7. With or without assistance, move equipment and materials such as cabinets, desks, building materials, etc., by hand or dolly. 
  8. May require working from ladders.
  9. Knowledge of safety precautions to be taken when using carpentry hand and machine tools and equipment. Training will be provided by the University on a regular basis.
  10. Recommend spare parts, maintain inventory and obtain parts and equipment through proper procedures – ie. Fill out purchase requests and get supervisory approval.
  11. Assists in general maintenance work with colleagues.
  12. Perform such similar, comparable, or related duties as may be required or assigned.

 

  1. Qualifications

Knowledge: High school or trade school diploma required. Valid Maryland driver’s license required.


Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ experience in maintenance carpentry trades as described above with a minimum of two years’ experience at the journeyman level. Lead abatement certification required.


Skills/Aptitude: Numerical ability, spatial ability, form perception, motor coordination, finger dexterity, manual dexterity.


Working Conditions: Indoor and outdoor work required daily. Extensive walking/moving throughout entire campus on a daily basis is required. Constantly positions self to maintain and perform maintenance on equipment that requires stooping, bending, kneeling. Occasionally ascends/descends a ladder to service lighting fixtures, ceiling tiles, etc. Frequently lifts, carries, pushes or pulls a variety of tools, materials and equipment up to 50 pounds. Manual and finger dexterity is needed to operate finger tools, equipment, and to repair locks. Quick and positive reaction in emergency situations. Occasional extended work periods. Frequently works with rotating machinery, drive belts, power tools, and is exposed to elevations and areas where ventilation, heating and cooling may be shut down, and confined spaces. Ability to speak and be understood under normal circumstances. This position has been identified as having a potential risk for occupational exposure to potentially infectious material; as such, this position is required to be offered the Hepatitis B Vaccine at no cost to the employee, and annual training on Preventing Exposure to Bloodbourne Pathogens must be completed

 

Work Schedule: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Monday – Friday. Schedule may include evenings and weekends on an as needed, on call basis. This position is designated as essential personnel.  This position is a temporary seasonal position which will start Mid-May 2026 and end in Mid-August 2026.
