OVERVIEW OF POSITION
The Sports Camp Counselor is responsible for supervising, instructing, and engaging children in grades K-8 during Notre Dame High School's Summer Sports Camp. The Counselor leads age-appropriate athletic activities, ensures the safety and well-being of all campers, models good sportsmanship and character, and creates a fun, inclusive, and faith-centered environment consistent with Notre Dame's Holy Cross Catholic mission.
This is a seasonal summer position, our sports camp runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from June 15th to July 2nd (no camp on June 19th).
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise assigned groups of campers (K-8) throughout the camp day, maintaining accurate attendance and ensuring camper safety at all times.
- Plan, lead, and actively participate in age-appropriate sports, games, drills, and team-building activities.
- Teach fundamental sports skills, rules, and sportsmanship in a positive, encouraging manner suited to a range of ages and ability levels.
- Enforce camp rules, safety protocols, and behavior expectations consistently and fairly.
- Monitor campers during arrival, dismissal, snack and lunch breaks, water breaks, and transitions between activities.
- Respond promptly to injuries, conflicts, or behavioral concerns, and report incidents to the Athletic Director or designated supervisor.
- Communicate professionally and respectfully with parents, guardians, fellow staff, and campers.
- Set up, maintain, and put away athletic equipment and camp facilities; keep activity areas clean and organized.
- Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating integrity, kindness, and the values of Notre Dame's Holy Cross Catholic mission.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or camp leadership.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age; high school diploma.
- Prior experience working with children in a camp, coaching, tutoring, babysitting, or youth-program setting.
- Background or strong interest in athletics; ability to instruct fundamental skills across multiple sports (e.g., basketball, soccer, flag football, volleyball, kickball).
- Ability to pass a background check and complete any required safe-environment training.
- Energetic, patient, and dependable, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to remain on feet, actively participate in physical activities, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions for the duration of the camp day.
- Ability to lift and carry athletic equipment up to 30 pounds.
