Founded in 1952, Norwood School is a coeducational, independent day school with approximately 450 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The School sits on 38 beautiful and expansive acres in Bethesda, Maryland, less than six miles from Washington, D.C. Norwood’s summer camp program (Summer at Norwood) is seeking Adventure Camp Counselors to work with a group of children during one-week sessions throughout the summer, guiding them through a variety of outdoor experiences. Counselors manage a group of campers in the classroom and help them prepare for their activities that day. Other responsibilities include leading hikes, coordinating and supervising adventures in cities and other outdoor areas, and supporting campers at rock climbing sites and whitewater activities. An ideal candidate will interact well with children and colleagues in diverse activities and be capable of problem-solving in different situations. In addition, a counselor will confidently lead experiential education games/activities while on campus and in the field. Other personal traits will include high-energy, proactive, and mindful of camper safety at all times.
Qualifications:
· Must be at least 18 years old with outdoor recreational experience
· Must be available to work 3 to 6 weeks between 7/5/22 - 8/12/22, M - F 8:00am - 3:30pm
· Staff training in June (TBA)
· Current First Aid/CPR (Wilderness First Aid a plus)
· Lifeguard, White Water/Swift Water Certifications a plus
· Planning/facilitation of experiential education initiatives with children
· Experience working with children in an outdoor environment
· Certifications and/or demonstrated experience in the following areas: rock climbing/belaying/rappelling, white water rafting/kayaking/canoeing (including any guiding), leading backpacking trips and day hikes, tree/plant/bird/animal tracking or identification, Leave NO Trace practices, developing lessons for children related to the environment/streams/geology
