Summary:

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides basic life support (BLS) care to patients in the prehospital and emergency department settings. Works effectively as part of a team or as a solo provider among volunteer EMS personnel. Demonstrates sound clinical judgment within the EMT scope of practice and delivers patient care in a professional, compassionate, and efficient manner. Supports paramedics and other advanced providers during patient care and may assist with scene coordination when appropriate

Responsibilities:

 

1. Maintains less than 2-minute activation time when the ambulance is available. Evaluates scene safety and proceeds appropriately; consistently follows universal precautions. Brings all required equipment to the patients side per policy. Ensures all patient equipment (per P&P) accompanies the patient during transport

2. Performs a thorough and timely patient history and physical exam appropriate to the patients condition and EMT scope. Implements BLS treatment plans per service guidelines and/or medical direction; explains care to patient/family; monitors and documents patient response. Provides patient care in the Emergency Department within scope of practice as appropriate on occasion

3. Attends required CME/PCE and maintains current continuing education hours per policy. Maintains a valid EMT certification at all times. Maintains current CPR certification and any additional required credentials (e.g., EVOC). Demonstrates a desire to increase knowledge by following patient progress and engaging with clinical staff.

4. Demonstrates knowledge of major roadways and response areas. Meets all driving program standards per P&P. Operates vehicles safely and courteously; provides a comfortable ride for patients and staff; parks safely.

5. Immediately upon coming on duty, checks vehicles, equipment, and supplies; completes required documentation; corrects deficiencies by restocking, cleaning, repairing, or following notification procedures. Reports all equipment or vehicle problems to EMS management immediately. Maintains vehicle and equipment in a clean, organized, and ready state.

6. Stows equipment properly per policy. Thoroughly and accurately completes all patient care reports per P&P. Completes all other required documentation per P&P. Maintains Sponsor Hospital Authorization Completes all documentation in a timely manner.�

7. Promotes a positive image of the EMS service within the community. Provides educational assistance to other healthcare providers and participates in public education activities. Works to resolve conflicts and demonstrates effective teamwork. Assists in the training of EMT students and new EMS personnel as assigned.

8. Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position, including adherence to organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and ethical standards.

9. Maintains and models the organization�s values.�

10. Demonstrates regular, reliable and predictable attendance.�

11. Performs other duties as required.�

Education Skills Experience:

Essential:
* HS Graduate or Equivalent

* Credentials: EMT - CT  and BLS/CPR from ARC or AHA

Working Conditions:

Manual: significant manual skills/motor coord & finger dexterity

Occupational: Some occupational risk

Physical Effort: Very Heavy effort. May exert up to 50 lbs. force

Physical Environment: Significant exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
