Job Title: Middle School Vocal Music and Middle School Show Choir
Reports to: Building Principal
Position Overview
Norwalk Middle School is seeking a passionate, dynamic, and student-centered Vocal Music Teacher to lead and grow a comprehensive middle school vocal music program. This educator will inspire students through high-quality instruction in general music and choral ensembles while fostering creativity, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for music.

Primary Responsibilities
Instruction & Programming
- Teach General Music courses that engage students in foundational music literacy, creativity, and appreciation.
- Direct and instruct:
- 6th Grade Choir
- 7th Grade Choir
- Middle School Show Choir
- Plan and produce a Middle School Musical, including auditions, rehearsals, and performances.
- Develop and implement standards-based curriculum aligned with district and state guidelines.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs and abilities of all learners.
Student Experience & Culture
- Create a student-centered classroom environment that promotes belonging, collaboration, and artistic expression.
- Foster student confidence through performance opportunities and constructive feedback.
- Encourage teamwork, responsibility, and pride in performance.
- Build strong relationships with students to support both musical and personal growth.
Performance & Events
- Organize and lead concerts, performances, and community events throughout the school year.
- Coordinate logistics for performances, including scheduling, communication, and set-up.
- Collaborate with other fine arts staff to support a cohesive arts program.
Collaboration & Leadership
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, administration, and the fine arts department.
- Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and school initiatives.
- Communicate effectively with families regarding student progress, performance, and expectations.
- Contribute to a positive, professional school culture aligned with Norwalk Middle School's values of being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn.
Program Development
- Build and sustain a high-quality vocal music program that encourages broad student participation.
- Promote choir and music opportunities to students and families.
Continuously reflect on and refine instructional practices to improve student outcomes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Music Education or related field (required)
- Valid Iowa Teaching License with appropriate endorsement (or ability to obtain)
- Experience teaching middle school vocal music preferred
- Strong background in choral direction and vocal pedagogy
- Experience with musical theater production preferred
Terms of Employment
190 day contract in accordance with the Master Contract.
Evaluation
In accordance with state code, Iowa Teaching Standards and local performance criteria.
FLSA Status
Exempt.
