Head Instructor/Board Sports Instructor wanted for 2026 season at NSS
The Head Instructor will be responsible for supervising the operations of the summer junior sailing program, learn-to-sail programming and a performance sailing program.
For qualified candidates, position can be combined with Board Sports Instruction for additional compensation- specifically windsurfing & wing foiling disciplines.
About our organization:
Norwalk Community Sailing was organized at the base of the historic Norwalk Sailing
School est. 1964, situated on the Long Island Sound at the Calf Pasture Beach in
Norwalk, CT teaching sailing and windsurfing to the public: youth and adults alike. Our junior program has been in the running for over 30 years at the beach: it is characterized by a laid back attitude, kinship developed among children of different ages, a love for adventure and exploration. Our focus is on safety and fun.
Responsibilities:
Sailing course/drill programming along US Sailing manuals for instructors
Skill progress measurement and reporting for program participants
Managing and mentoring junior sailing instructors
Maintaining accurate chase boat and sail boat inspection and maintenance records
Ability to work with different age groups from children to teenagers to adults
Communicating with the management team, parents and adult learners
Making sure all sailing operations are in strict compliance of US Sailing safety protocols and industry best practices
Required experience
- Sailing instruction experience
- Day-to-day program operations, including rigging and boat maintenance
- Regatta organizing and management experience- desirable
- Experience coaching youth and adult sailing
- Good communication skills, patience, team spirit
Desired skills
- sailboat maintenance, inventory and fiberglass repair
- basic outboard maintenance
- Board Sports experience windsurfing/wingfoiling
Requirements necessary to commence employment:
First Aid/CPR
US Sailing Small Boat Level I/II
CT Boaters License
Safety at Sea Coastal or Offshore - desirable
Passing a background check

Employment term: June 1, 2026 - September 15, 2026
Full-time hours (8) include a paid lunch break, addtional weekend hours
Schedule accommodations will be made for successful candidates who work in formal education.
Compensation: $15000-25,000 per season, commensurate with experience and job duties assigned.
