Position Purpose
The Church Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, appearance, operational condition, and safety of all church facilities. This role provides essential support that enables Northwoods Church to present a welcoming, well-maintained environment for weekly worship services, Wednesday activities, meetings, and special events.
Key Responsibilities
General Cleaning & Sanitization
- Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors throughout all buildings at least twice weekly; clean portable buildings at least once weekly.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms — including toilets, sinks, urinals, and partitions — and restock paper products and soap twice weekly and before/after special events.
- Wipe down and sanitize all surfaces, tables, countertops, and light switches twice weekly, with special attention to children’s areas, classrooms, and the fellowship hall.
- Clean the Alpha & Omega Building weekly.
- Dust office furniture, window sills, chair rails, and blinds weekly.
- Clean all interior windows and mirrors monthly; keep glass entry doors free of smudges as needed.
- Remove scuff marks on tile flooring and clean walls behind trash receptacles as needed.
- Ensure all entrances, hallways, and common areas are consistently tidy and presentable.
Facility Operations & Waste Management
- Empty all trash and recycling receptacles twice weekly and before all services and events, replacing liners as necessary.
- Move furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed to set up and break down the sanctuary and individual rooms for church events.
- Secure facilities after operating hours by locking doors and setting the alarm.
Maintenance & Supply Oversight
- Keep all janitorial equipment (vacuums, mops, floor buffers, etc.) in good working condition, including regularly emptying vacuum bags and replacing mop heads.
- Assist with inventory tracking of cleaning supplies and chemicals, following all instructions for safe use and disposal.
- Report any significant damages or repair needs to the Office Administrator promptly.
Qualifications
- Previous custodial or janitorial experience required.
- Familiarity with industrial cleaning equipment, chemical applications, and occupational safety/hazardous disposal practices.
- Strong time-management, organizational, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to follow written, oral, and diagram-based instructions and exercise sound judgment in problem-solving.
- Conscientious and detail-oriented; able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Cooperative, respectful, and courteous in all interactions with staff, members, and guests.
- Presents oneself in a manner befitting a representative of the church — discrete, professional, and respectful of the sacred environment.
- Must possess a valid government-issued photo ID.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, and kneel for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
- Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to perform repetitive tasks.
- Adequate hearing, vision, and communication ability to perform all assigned duties effectively.
