Job Title: Head Start Lead Teacher 

Report to: Director of Early Childhood Education

Compensation: $53,000 to $57,000 Annually

Status: Full time (Monday thru Friday 8:30am to 5pm, Year-round)

Location: Chicago, IL 

 

Northwestern University Settlement House has been supporting children and families through high-quality education and community programming for over a century. We are currently seeking a dedicated and passionate Lead Teacher for our Head Start Program who holds a Professional Educator License (PEL). As a Lead Teacher, you will be responsible for developing and implementing individualized education plans that promote the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth of each child. You’ll work under the general supervision of the Director of Early Childhood Education and in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, NAEYC Standards, and Community Partnership CPS requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.

  • Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with Creative Curriculum, NAEYC, and Head Start standards.

  • Supervise and evaluate assistant teachers, teacher aides, and classroom volunteers.

  • Facilitate learning experiences in early literacy, math, science, music, arts, and social-emotional development.

  • Ensure classroom materials and physical setup support optimal child development.

  • Maintain accurate records, child assessments, and documentation.

  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences and family engagement activities.

  • Collaborate with Family Workers and educational consultants for child development and referrals.

  • Plan and lead classroom field trips and related activities.

  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development workshops.

  • Support and guide classroom behavior using developmentally appropriate practices.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field 

  • Professional Educator License (PEL) in Early Childhood Education 

  • ECE Level 5 Credential 

  • 2–5 years of experience teaching preschool-aged children

  • Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred

  • CPR/First Aid Certification (or willing to complete within first year)

  • Strong knowledge of child development and early learning standards

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and collaboration skills

Physical & Work Environment Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to sit on the floor, bend, stoop, kneel, and actively participate in child-centered activities.

  • Punctual and consistent attendance is essential to effectively fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

  • Able to work in a variety of noise levels—from quiet offices to lively playgrounds.

Compensation & Benefits:
