What are the responsibilities and job description for the Financial Advisor | Entrepreneurial Sales & Business Ownership position at Northwestern Mutual?
Build something that can last for generations.
You don’t need a background in finance to build a successful career in financial planning.
Some of the people who thrive here come from sales, business development, recruiting, athletics, hospitality, leadership, entrepreneurship, and other careers where success requires discipline, relationship-building, resilience, and drive.
This opportunity is for someone who wants more than their next job. You want to build something of your own.
As a Financial Representative on the path to becoming a Financial Advisor with Northwestern Mutual, you’ll build a financial planning practice helping individuals, families, and businesses create financial security, build wealth, and plan for the generations ahead.
At the same time, you’re building something for yourself—a business, a career, and an opportunity that can have a lasting impact on your own family and community.
Financial services experience is not required. Bring the drive, relationship skills, and willingness to learn. We’ll teach you the business.
What You’ll Do
- Build your client base through relationships, referrals, networking, and an exceptional client experience
- Learn to understand each client’s goals, priorities, and financial needs
- Develop personalized financial plans across investments, insurance, retirement, education funding, business planning, and more
- Build long-term relationships and help clients navigate financial decisions throughout their lives
- Grow a practice that can evolve with your vision—whether that means building a team, pursuing advanced planning, leadership, or eventually opening an office
Build Your Business - Backed by a Fortune 500 Company (#109)!
You’ll own the responsibility for growing your practice, but you won’t be expected to figure it out by yourself.
We invest heavily in your development and provide infrastructure designed to help you build faster, including:
- Dedicated business coaching and mentorship
- Structured training and professional development
- Licensing and education support
- Experienced financial planning professionals
- New-business and insurance support
- Technology and financial planning tools
- Accounting, operational, and business-management resources
- A network of experienced advisors and leaders
You bring the ambition. We provide the training, coaching, and infrastructure to help you turn it into a business.
You May Thrive Here If You:
- Have an entrepreneurial mindset and want greater ownership over your career
- Have succeeded in sales, business development, athletics, recruiting, hospitality, leadership, or another relationship-driven environment
- Are motivated by results and the opportunity to increase your income through performance
- Enjoy meeting people, creating opportunities, and building relationships
- Are coachable and willing to receive feedback, practice, and continuously improve
- Have the resilience and discipline to keep going when building something gets hard
- Want your work to have a meaningful impact on your clients, family, and community
- A bachelor’s degree
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship are required.
Training & Licensing
No financial planning experience is required.
Northwestern Mutual provides structured training, coaching, licensing support, and ongoing professional development. Financial Advisors obtain applicable insurance and securities licenses, which may include Life/Accident & Health, SIE, Series 6, Series 7, and Series 63.
Compensation & Benefits
This is an entrepreneurial, performance-based career—not a traditional salaried position.
Building a successful practice takes significant effort, particularly in the early years. Your income grows with the business and client relationships you build, without being limited by a traditional salary structure.
Northwestern Mutual also provides compensation designed to support training and early development, including productivity incentives, bonus programs, expense allowances, and renewal income where applicable.
Advisor earnings:
- Average annual earnings: $61K–$119K for representatives in their first three years
- Top 25% annual earnings: $137K–$250K for top-quartile advisors in their first three years
- Additional benefits include retirement and pension benefits, medical, vision and dental plans, life and disability income insurance, parental benefits, licensing support, and CFP® certification support.
This isn’t for everyone.
If you’re looking primarily for a fixed salary and a traditional 9-to-5, this may not be the career you’re looking for.
But if you want to work hard, bet on your own growth, serve your community, and build something that can make an impact for generations—we should talk.
Build your practice. Build your impact. Build something that lasts.
