Position Title: Natural Resource Management (Vegetation) Individual Placement
Position Summary:
Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is recruiting one (1), 16-Week (640 hours) Natural Resource Management (Vegetation) Individual Placement starting in May 2026 and ending in August 2026. The selected placements will assist in management of natural resources at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, Minidoka National Historic Site, and Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument. Some work will also occur at Big Hole National Battlefield. The work will be field-oriented and will predominately be to support the vegetation management team through invasive plant management, vegetation monitoring, rare plant surveys, and restoration efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific activities will include:

General Resource Management (10%)
- Assist the wildlife program and other divisions as needed, such as cultural resources or interpretation and education staff.
- Prepare information on resource activities to present to co-workers and the public.

Invasive Plant Surveys and Treatment (35%)
- Survey, identify, map exotic and invasive vegetation.
- Treat exotic vegetation through hand-pulling and herbicide application.
- Document treatments and update files and GIS layers.
- Maintain equipment.
- If interested, will be able to study and take the exam for an Idaho Pesticide Applicator's License.

Vegetation Monitoring (35%)
- Survey, identify, and map native vegetation, including rare and sensitive plant species populations.
- Complete hazard tree surveys.
- Monitor forest health through pathogen and defoliation surveys.
- Document findings and update GIS and files.
- Seed Collection and Restoration (20%)
- Collect seeds for future restoration and replanting efforts.
- Disperse seed in designated restoration areas.
- Plant seedlings in restoration areas.
- Document activities and ensure correct labeling of collected materials.
Required Qualifications:
- Ages 18-30 (up to 35 for veterans)
- S. Citizen or lawful, permanent resident
- Must pass a background/driver check and government background security check.
- Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather across uneven terrain.
- Willingness to work independently in an outdoor setting.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 45 pounds.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Good written and verbal communication skills and a positive attitude.
- Current driver's license.
- Knowledge of Pacific Northwest and/or Great Basin plants and natural resources.
- Coursework in biology and/or botany experience and a strong interest in conservation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Personal transportation
- Experience reading maps.
- Previous experience using GPS devices.
- Experience in field data collection.
Duty Location:
Duties are primarily performed within Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in Arco, Idaho. The standard work schedule would be 7 am - 5:30 pm Mon-Thur. Over 75% of work will be performed in the field with the remainder in an office setting. Approximately 36 nights will be spent camping.
Terms of Employment:
One individual placement will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting May 2026 through August 2026 for a total of 16 Weeks. The individual placement will average 40 hours of labor per week, minus holidays.
Individual placements are responsible for providing their own personal transportation and food.
Program Benefits:
Individual placements will earn a total living allowance of $10,240, dispersed on a monthly basis throughout the 16 weeks (640 hours). Housing will be provided at park headquarters at no cost to the intern.
The living allowance is taxable.
