What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Sustainability Coordinator, Facility Services position at Northwest Missouri State University?
PRIMARY DUTY: The Environmental Sustainability Coordinator works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to develop, coordinate, and promote effective sustainability initiatives to reduce the University’s impact on the environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maximizes recycling, waste reduction, and food composting
- Initiates, promotes, educates, and coordinates programs, practices, and activities.
- Coordinates extracurricular campus activities and engages the campus community to participate in such events as Earth Day celebration and the annual Race to Zero Waste competition.
- Develops baseline, then collects, monitors and analyzes data, reports and communicates progress toward established performance metrics/KPI’s.
- Researches new and innovative methods.

- Engages campus community in implementing energy conservation measures.
- Promotes campus community participation in scheduled energy curtailments.

- Elevates presence of sustainability
- Creates promotional and educational materials by writing, editing, and designing content for brochures, fliers, bulletin board displays, newsletters, guides, and training materials pertaining to environmental sustainability, including the Missouri Arboretum.
- Delivers presentations to classes, student organizations, and other groups to engage, educate, and increase awareness of environmental sustainability, including the Missouri Arboretum.
- Serves as an advisor to the Bearcats Going Green student club.
- Maintains the content on the sustainability and recycling web pages.
- Organizes sustainability-related volunteer activities.
- Collaborates with Facility Services on programs and practices relating to landscape biodiversity protection, storm water management, energy management, eco-friendly chemicals, and phasing of non- fossil fuel vehicles and equipment.
- Coordinates and compiles University data for the ongoing Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) self-assessment program and enters data from campus organizations into the STARS reporting tool for submittal to AASHE.
- Improves the effectiveness of the University’s sustainability practices by monitoring best and next practices with both peer and aspirational peer institutions and make recommendations and modifications to existing programs and practices.

REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in an environmentally related discipline, communications, or marketing
Experience: Two years of experience developing, maintaining, and or managing sustainability-based initiatives, processes, programs involving the collection, analysis, and reporting of program data
Skills: Technical acumen to develop and maintain a variety of related data which includes, but not limited to metrics, collection, measurement, evaluation, mathematical analysis, and reporting; Ability to define problems or opportunities, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; High level of ability to interface, energize, and achieve buy-in with the campus community pertaining to environmental sustainability practices and initiatives; Ability to effectively engage with people at all levels of the University with enthusiasm; Ability to work some flexible hours; Organizational abilities, accuracy, and attention to detail; Ability to utilize Microsoft Office products to maintain data and create public-facing newsletters, brochures, and other materials.
WORKING CONDITIONS: This position is considered essential staff. Essential staff provides services that relate directly to the health, safety, and welfare of the University, ensure continuity of key operations, and maintain and protect University properties. Should the University close for any reason, essential staff will report to work as usual. This position must purchase and maintain a cellular device and service that will be used for work functions. This position must be responsible for plan choices, calling areas, service features, terminations clauses, and paying for all charges associated with the cellular device and service.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is performed in a variety of settings. Occasional lifting of materials that may weigh up to 25 pounds may occur. Some extended periods of standing, walking, stooping, as well as sitting at a computer are required.
