Job Summary:
- The High School English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher inspires students, fosters a love for literature and writing, and helps develop critical thinking and communication skills. Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in English, English Education, or a related field.
- Certification: Valid teaching certification in Secondary English/ELA for 9th-12th grade.
- Experience:
- Previous teaching experience at the high school level preferred.
- Strong knowledge of English literature, grammar, and composition.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to engage and motivate students.
- Proficiency in integrating technology into the classroom.
Essential Functions:
- Daily in person instruction working collaboratively with students, staff and families.
- Teachers typically work during school hours but may need to attend meetings, professional development sessions, and school events outside regular hours as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Physical requirements include standing, walking, and interacting with students throughout the day.
Key Responsibilities:
- Curriculum Planning and Instruction:
- Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that adhere to state and school curriculum standards.
- Teach a range of ELA courses, including but not limited to Pre AP English 9, AP Seminar, AP Language/Literature Composition, English 11, English 12, AP Research, Creative Writing, offering a range of American, British, and World Literature of all genres throughout the four-year curriculum.
- Use a variety of instructional strategies to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
- Integrate technology and multimedia resources to enhance the learning experience.
- Assessment and Evaluation:
- Design and administer assessments to evaluate student progress and understanding.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback on student assignments, essays, and projects.
- Maintain accurate records of student performance and progress.
- Classroom Management:
- Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning.
- Implement effective classroom management strategies to ensure a safe and orderly learning environment.
- Address and resolve student behavior issues in accordance with school policies.
- Student Support and Engagement:
- Foster a supportive and encouraging atmosphere for all students.
- Identify and support students with varying academic needs, including those requiring additional help or advanced challenges.
- Encourage students to develop critical thinking, analytical, and creative skills.
- Professional Development and Collaboration:
- Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in ELA education.
- Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and parents to support student achievement and school initiatives.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of school-wide literacy programs.
- Extracurricular Involvement:
- Advise or coach extracurricular activities, such as the school newspaper, literary magazine, or debate team, as needed.
