Job Summary
The Elementary Assistant Principal assists the principal in the administration, supervision, and management of the instructional program, student services, and daily operations of the school. The assistant principal supports a positive school climate, promotes student achievement, and helps ensure the school operates in accordance with School Board policies and applicable state and federal regulations.
The assistant principal works collaboratively with staff, students, families, and the community to support the mission and goals of Northumberland County Public Schools.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists the principal in providing instructional leadership to support effective teaching and improved student achievement.
- Supports the implementation of school improvement initiatives aligned with division goals and the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL).
- Assists with supervision and evaluation of instructional and support staff in accordance with division procedures.
- Assists with supervision and evaluation of licensed and classified personnel.
- Helps maintain a safe, orderly, and positive learning environment.
- Assists in maintaining discipline throughout the student body and addresses student behavioral concerns as needed.
- Assists in supervising student attendance reporting and monitoring, and works with appropriate personnel on follow-up actions related to attendance concerns.
- Assumes responsibility for coordinating operational services such as transportation, custodial services, cafeteria operations, and other school support services as assigned.
- Assists with safety inspections and coordination of school safety drills in accordance with division procedures.
- Supports daily school operations including scheduling, student supervision, and coordination of school activities.
- Serves with parent, faculty, and student groups as requested to advance school programs and initiatives.
- Maintains effective communication with students, staff, parents, and community stakeholders.
- Ensures compliance with School Board policies, division procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or Superintendent’s designee.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, or related field.
- Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement in Administration and Supervision.
- Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience, preferably at the elementary level.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in an educational setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of instructional leadership and effective teaching practices.
- Knowledge of Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and student assessment practices.
- Knowledge of student discipline procedures, school operations, and attendance requirements.
- Knowledge of special education programs, regulations, and procedures, including the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and services for students with disabilities in accordance with federal and state guidelines.
- Ability to assist in supervising and evaluating staff.
- Ability to analyze student performance data to support instructional improvement.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, families, and community members.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
