Employment Type: Full-Time (10-Month Position)

Shift Schedule: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Position Summary

Northside Charter High School seeks an enthusiastic and dedicated Special Education Science Teacher for the 2026–2027 academic year. The ideal candidate will inspire students to develop strong scientific reasoning, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving skills through rigorous, engaging instruction and meaningful collaboration.

This role centers on delivering high-quality science instruction while ensuring students with disabilities receive appropriate accommodations, modifications, and specially designed instruction aligned to IEP goals. As New York State Education Department (NYSED) graduation requirements evolve, we are seeking an innovative educator who is ready to think strategically about instructional design, assessment, and accessibility. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with the science and special education teams to develop and implement forward-thinking approaches that ensure students meet graduation benchmarks while building the skills necessary for post-secondary success.

This position requires a teacher who is reflective, adaptable, and committed to continuous improvement, someone eager to help shape a program that prepares students not just for exams, but for college-level coursework, career readiness, and independent problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Delivery: Plan and deliver engaging, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) -aligned lessons, which may include Life Science Biology, Earth and Space Science, Chemistry, Physics and Human Anatomy depending on expertise and school need.

Specially Designed Instruction (SPED): Provide specialized instruction to meet the needs of students with disabilities, aligning daily instruction to IEP goals and ensuring appropriate scaffolds, accommodations, and modifications.

IEP Implementation & Compliance: Implement IEPs with fidelity, maintain required documentation, monitor progress toward IEP goals, and collaborate with the special education team to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and timelines.

Co-Teaching/Collaboration: Collaborate with general education science teachers and related service providers to plan instruction, co-teach when assigned, and align supports to maximize student access and achievement.

College Readiness: Integrate PSAT, SAT, and college-level problem types into daily instruction (with appropriate supports) to strengthen students’ analytical reasoning, problem-solving stamina, and readiness for post-secondary expectations.

Student Engagement: Foster a classroom culture that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a growth mindset in science.

Skill Development: Help students build foundational skills to solve problem sets involving deep reasoning and real-world application.

Assessment and Feedback: Design and administer assessments to evaluate student progress, provide timely and constructive feedback, analyze data, and tailor instruction to meet diverse learning needs (including IEP-driven supports).

Differentiation: Adapt instruction to accommodate various learning levels and styles, ensuring all students are supported and challenged through scaffolded pathways to grade-level content.

Classroom Management: Maintain an organized, respectful, and positive learning environment.

Parent/Guardian Communication: Maintain open and proactive communication with parents and guardians about student progress, IEP-related updates (as appropriate), and classroom activities.

Professional Growth: Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in science instruction, special education, and inclusive pedagogy.

School Community: Participate in school events, committees, and initiatives to contribute to the broader school culture.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Special Education, Education, or a related field.

  • Strong knowledge of science concepts and effective teaching practices.

  • Completed at least one full academic year in a classroom teaching role.

  • Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction and support diverse learners.


Preferred

  • Active teaching certification in Special Education and/or secondary science  (or ability to obtain certification before the start date). 

  • Experience teaching students with IEPs in inclusive, ICT, self-contained, or resource settings.

  • Experience teaching Advanced Placement (AP) science courses.

  • Familiarity with integrating technology into science instruction.

Salary : $65,000 - $110,000
