What are the responsibilities and job description for the Building Assistant, 7.5 hrs/day position at NORTHRIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL?
JOB GOALS: To provide students a smooth functioning learning environment, which allows them to take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Supervise In-School Suspension, as assigned. This includes requesting students’ work from teachers, assisting students, returning assignments to teachers, and escorting students to lunch.
- Provide supervision of the lobby before and after school as assigned.
- Provide student supervision during all three lunch periods as assigned.
- Fill in for teachers during RAFT and IEP conferences as needed.
- Provide coverage of the ELL classroom as needed and assigned.
- Cover the front desk as assigned.
- Provide attendance duties as needed and assigned.
- Assist in the library as needed and assigned.
- Responsible for bulletin board and cabinet displays in the south lobby as assigned.
- Work with the VIP Program. Duties may include serving as the co-facilitator; requesting nominations from teachers quarterly; making food arrangements and picking up the food; coordinating room usage for the luncheon; displaying photos of VIP recipients; plan the VIP Honor Recognition.
- Work with the ARMS Program. This may include serving as the liaison for the mentor once the student has been assigned; calling the mentor when the student is absent.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Assistants hired after January 8, 2006, must have:
- Completed two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education; or
- Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; or
- Passed the Para Pro Test
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of school employees, students or parents.
MATHEMATICAL SKILL:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Must be proficient in the use of computers for various office applications and be able to accurately type. Employee should also be able to use the machines, tools, equipment, and work aids that may be representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work, i.e., computer, copy machine, calculator, sorting machines, tools, charts, forms, ledgers, schedules, text books. Employee must maintain a positive relationship with other staff, parents, and students.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
187 days per year. Salary and benefits as per Classified Policy.
EVALUATION:
An evaluation will be done on the employee's performance on an annual basis.
