Math Lab Tutor Northland Workforce Training Center (NWTC) is seeking a highly skilled and student-centered Math Lab Tutor to provide individualized and group academic support to students in technical training programs. This role is essential in reinforcing foundational and applied math concepts that align with NWTC’s advanced manufacturing programs, including CNC Machining, Electrical, Mechatronics, and Welding. The Math Lab Tutor will help address academic learning loss, particularly among students impacted by remote high school instruction during the pandemic, while also supporting nontraditional adult learners who require math skill remediation. Candidates must demonstrate strong communication skills, instructional expertise in mathematics, and the ability to build trust with students from diverse backgrounds. Reporting Relationships Reports To: Chief Program Officer Coordinates With: Coordinates With: Academic instructors, program coordinators, and student support staff Essential Functions The Math Lab Tutor is responsible for providing academic remediation and tutoring in key math concepts required for success in advanced manufacturing programs. Responsibilities include: Tutoring and Instruction * Deliver one-on-one and small group math tutoring sessions focused on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and applied technical math. * Provide instruction in measurement, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and conversions between metric and standard systems. * Support students in applied industry topics such as circuits (Ohm’s Law, resistors, capacitors, inductors), torque, conduit bending, tolerance, and proportional relationships. * Assist students in developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills through practical, hands-on examples related to their trade. * Adapt instructional strategies to meet diverse learning styles, including support for English as a Second Language (ESL) students. Page 2 Student Support * Build rapport and maintain consistent communication with students to monitor academic progress and identify skill gaps. * Collaborate with instructors to align tutoring with classroom content and technical coursework. * Provide feedback and encouragement to promote persistence and retention among students. * Track attendance and student participation in Math Lab sessions. Program Development and Reporting * Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, student progress, and program outcomes. * Contribute to data collection and reporting for grant-funded support, including documentation of tutoring sessions and outcomes. * Recommend instructional materials, exercises, and resources that reinforce key math concepts. * Support continuous improvement of Math Lab operations, scheduling, and instructional delivery. Required Skills & Experience Instructional Skills * Demonstrated ability to teach and reinforce foundational and applied math skills in a one-on-one or small-group setting. * Experience tutoring or teaching adult learners or technical students preferred. * Ability to translate abstract math concepts into practical, industry-relevant applications. Communication * Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills. * Ability to build rapport and motivate students from diverse backgrounds. * Commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Position Details Location: 683 Northland Avenue Buffalo, New York 14211 Compensation: $18.00-$28.00/hour Work Schedule: Part-time (12 hours) with required afternoons, (Monday- Thursday, 2:15pm-5:15pm).
