Position Summary:
The Medical Collections Specialist is responsible for managing outstanding patient and insurance account balances for the imaging center. This position ensures timely and accurate collection of payments, resolution of billing discrepancies, and maintenance of compliance with all healthcare regulations and payer requirements. The specialist plays a key role in supporting the financial health of the imaging center through efficient follow-up and exceptional customer service.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and manage accounts receivable to ensure timely collection of patient and insurance payments.
- Contact insurance companies to resolve unpaid, denied, or underpaid claims.
- Communicate with patients regarding outstanding balances, payment plans, and billing inquiries.
- Post insurance and patient payments accurately to the appropriate accounts.
- Identify and correct billing errors and coordinate re-submission of corrected claims when necessary.
- Verify insurance benefits and eligibility when needed to support claim resolution.
- Maintain detailed documentation of collection activities within the practice management system.
- Work closely with the billing, coding, and front desk teams to ensure accurate charge entry and claim submission.
- Follow up on claim appeals and ensure proper documentation for denials and adjustments.
- Adhere to HIPAA and all applicable federal, state, and payer regulations regarding patient confidentiality and billing practices.
- Generate and analyze aging reports to prioritize collection efforts.
- Escalate complex collection issues to management when necessary.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of medical collections experience, preferably in an imaging, radiology, or outpatient healthcare setting.
- Knowledge of medical billing, insurance claim processing, and payer reimbursement guidelines.
- Familiarity with CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes used in imaging/radiology billing.
- Proficiency in medical billing software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of HIPAA and healthcare compliance requirements.
