Summary Of Purpose

This position is responsible for helping students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development. The position is accountable for planning a program of study and instructing the class at the designated time to learn that program of study. Critical areas currently include; preparing class assignments, establishing objectives for all lessons, assessing student’s accomplishments, and providing purposeful assignments for teacher paraprofessionals and/or volunteers in concert with the objectives and educational mission of the school district.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide effective instruction in all curricular areas as assigned by the building principal in accordance with district approved curriculum.
  • Prepare for program of study assigned and show written evidence of planning and preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Provide instruction and support for individual student differences and collaborate with appropriate professional staff to address individual or group needs and make recommended modifications or accommodations.
  • Provide a positive learning environment that is consistent with instructional goals and appropriate student achievement.
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with parents, students, community and other staff.
  • Accurately assess student progress, maintain records, and communicate with appropriate staff and/or parents regarding academic progress, special needs and concerns related to students.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and classroom affairs as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Maintain a substitute folder and lesson plans in accordance with building procedures.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher paraprofessionals and/or volunteers cooperatively with school/district consultants.
  • Comply with regulations and provisions specific to working with exceptional students, including but not limited to Giftedness, IEP’s, Section 504 service contracts and Health Plans.
  • Comply with Title 22 Professional Standards and Practice, mandated reporting, district policies and established building procedures.
  • Provide maintenance, upkeep and storage for classroom tools/equipment/supplies/fluids in accordance with MSDS standards including: ordering, stocking and reporting.

Secondary Job Functions

  • Demonstrate ability to operate various devices to integrate technology into instruction.
  • Accurately maintain required student records and progress reporting.
  • Demonstrate ability to use various student data to inform instructional practices.
  • Participate in the Child Study Team process, the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Process, and student Individual Educational Programs when requested and/or needed.
  • Participate actively and cooperatively as a team member in parent-teacher conferences and staff meetings.
  • Participate in professional growth opportunities that satisfy district requirements and expectations of a professional.
  • Encourage a positive, mutually supportive home-school- community relationship.
  • Be cooperative, congenial, and service-oriented with a positive attitude.
  • Make annual budget recommendations regarding the purchase of educational materials.
  • Efficiently take precautions to protect students, utilize and maintain building facilities, equipment, supplies, and materials.
  • Perform other reasonable duties and assignments as requested by the principal and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Other Essential Duties

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Must be capable of writing reports, letters, and other stakeholder correspondence using correct grammar, sentence structure and spelling. Present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents and the general public.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: Able to solve practical problems and deal with several variables at once. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Other Required Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; strong skills in oral and written communication.

Marginal Functions

Marginal functions will vary with the specific assignment and depend on the particular position function for which the person is responsible. In addition to conducting classroom activities, teachers may over­see study halls and homerooms, supervise extracurricular activ­ities, accompany students on field trips, and/or supervise students during lunch.

SCOPE AND IMPACT

This position involves a wide scope of responsibility in varying degrees of complexity. Internal contacts include other teachers, administrators, students, support personnel in each building, district office, volunteers, and other school district employees. External contacts include parents, community, various organizations involved with the district, and vendors sponsoring seminars. Responsible for supervising the teacher paraprofessional, student teachers, and/or volunteer(s) located in the classroom.

Minimum Requirements

This position requires a B.A. or B.S. Approved driver’s license necessary for operation of district vehicles. The following clearances must be provided upon hire and updated every five years in accordance with Act 153: PA State Police- Act 34, Child Abuse- Act 151, and FBI Fingerprint-Act 114. Child Abuse training (or proof of completion) in accordance with Act 126 upon hire and repeated every five years thereafter. A negative TB test is required upon hire.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Must have or be eligible to obtain a current Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate with endorsement in English in accordance with Pennsylvania Department of Education Certification and Staffing Policy Guidelines (CSPG).

PHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs. such as boxes of books and technology equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff. Employee must be able to accomplish the performance responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation. It is the responsibility of the employee to inform their Supervisor of any and all reasonable accommodation requests.
