What are the responsibilities and job description for the Unarmed Security Officer position at Northern VA Community College?
This position is responsible for providing security and safety functions on the NVCC campuses and all property owned by the College and to provide a safe and secure environment.
The NOVA Police Department is established as a college-wide entity with the responsibility to maintain safety and security of all employees, students and visitors, and property owned or controlled by the College. As such, all police department employees are subject to short-term and long-term reassignments that may include different locations, rotating schedules and duties dependent on the needs of the department and/or staff professional development.
Duties and Tasks:
- Duties encompass patrol, traffic control (vehicular and pedestrian),site and building access
- Assisting the public
- Information exchange and reporting unusual or emergency conditions to the appropriate authorities.
Must be able to pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Ability to complete DCJS Campus Security Officer training certification.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to speak and understand English
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the laws of the Commonwealth, local ordinances and College policies through performance of daily tasks.
- Ability to maintain positive public relations.
- Ability to meet physical demands of job duties.
- Ability to Pass a psychological and physical exam.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 21 years of age
- Must be a United States citizen or have been a lawful resident of the United States for the past 5 consecutive years
- Qualification for appointment as a campus security officer under DCJS guidelines
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Pass a background investigation
- No criminal record
- Experience as a security officer, preferably in the field of college, university or high school security enforcement.
