What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dental Assistant position at Northern VA Community College?
The Dental Assistant will provide principles of four-handed dentistry, coordination for the operations of front desk activates, management of inventory control of patient records to ensure compliance with prescribed program quality assurance/risk management procedures, as well as knowledge of OSHA and HIPAA regulations.
Duties and Tasks:
- Provides principles of four-handed dentistry for the delivery of services during dental procedures coordinates the activities of the front desk
- Making and receiving telephone calls concerning dental services
- Scheduling appointments
- Maintaining inventory and supplies, and recall systems,
- Preparing instruments for treatment
- Maintaining treatment areas according to infection and biohazardous control protocols, as well as exposing diagnostic x-rays
- Perform expanded duties as delegated by the Commonwealth of Virginia to dental assistants. Utilize electronic dental office software to maintain patient records.
- Practice infection control practices for the preparation of the dental operatory, as well as the cleaning and sterilization of instruments.
- Maintain records of dental laboratory cases.
- Maintain records of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
- Knowledge of OSHA and HIPAA protocols as it applies to the delivery of dental treatment.
- Manages patient re-care and appointment databases utilizing dental software programs.
Special Assignment:
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

- Knowledge and skills of the principles of four-handed dentistry.
- Knowledge and skills of dental office practice management procedures.
- Knowledge and skills to utilize basic computer software programs such as Microsoft Office and dental office electronic software.
- Knowledge and skills to expose diagnostic x-rays.
- Knowledge of legal and ethical aspects for clinical practice.
- Knowledge of OSHA and HIPAA regulations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Minimum Requirements:
- Experience training in dental assisting
- Certification in x-rays
- Current CPR Certification by the American Heart Association.
- Current immunization record such as tetanus, HEP-B vaccination series and/or documented immunity.
- Current TB testing or chest x-ray.
- Certified Dental Assisting credential from the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.
- Graduate from an accredited dental assisting program by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.
- Experience in dental assisting and/or dental office management as it pertains to quality assurance, inventory control of patient records, and recare systems
- Experience in dental health care management in an educational setting.
