What are the responsibilities and job description for the Behavior Management Specialist (BMS) – Part-Time position at Northern Utah Counseling?
At Northern Utah Counseling, our mission is to provide each child the opportunity to reach their greatest potential. As a Behavioral Management Specialist (BMS), you’ll work alongside therapists and teachers in a structured classroom setting, providing coaching, mentorship, and behavioral support to children enrolled in our therapeutic day-treatment program.
Program Schedule
Cornerstone Academy operates Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:15 PM during the Davis School District academic year. Children receive both academic and therapeutic support throughout the day.
- 8:30 AM: Staff arrive to assist with student drop-off and morning transition
- 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Academic (school) programming
- 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM: Therapeutic groups led by licensed therapists
- 5:15 PM: End of day and student pick-up
Summer Program:
From June–August, Cornerstone runs a shortened schedule (8:30 AM to 2:15 PM), which will result in changed work hours.
Scheduled Hours for This Position
This role provides 15–25 hours per week, with scheduling based on program needs. We are seeking either one dedicated staff member or two individuals who can share and alternate hours and shifts. Applicants with open availability, especially for on-call morning program coverage and occasional shift coverage, may have the opportunity to pick up additional hours as they become available.
Key Responsibilities
- Support children enrolled in our therapeutic day-treatment program
- Learn and implement treatment strategies aligned with individualized treatment goals
- Monitor, document, and report behavioral incidents as needed
- Engage children through play, praise, and therapeutic communication techniques
- Help children regulate emotions and return to safety with strong boundaries
- Implement approved safety holds when appropriate (training provided)
- Collaborate with therapists, teachers, and team members to maintain a supportive environment
Qualifications
Preferred:
- RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) certification
- ABA experience or related ABA certification
Required:
- A strong desire to work with children in a mental health setting
- Excellent emotional regulation and a calm, confident demeanor under pressure
- Ability to set and maintain strong, consistent boundaries
- Willingness to use approved safety holds after training
- Reliability, teamwork, patience, and a positive attitude
- Willingness to provide on-call support when needed
- Experience in mental health, education, childcare, or behavioral settings is helpful, but not required—we will train the right person
