About the Role:
The Underground Miner - Jumbo Operator plays a critical role in the safe and efficient extraction of mineral resources from underground mining sites. This position involves operating jumbo drilling machines to create tunnels and blast holes, enabling the advancement of mining operations. The role requires a strong focus on safety protocols to protect oneself and team members in a challenging underground environment. The operator must collaborate closely with engineers and other mining personnel to ensure precise drilling according to mine plans. Ultimately, this position contributes directly to the productivity and success of mining projects by facilitating the controlled development of underground workings.
Responsibilities:
- Operate jumbo drilling equipment to drill blast holes accurately according to engineering specifications.
- Conduct pre-operational inspections and routine maintenance on jumbo machinery to ensure optimal performance and safety.
- Follow all safety regulations and procedures to maintain a secure working environment underground.
- Coordinate with blasting crews and other mining personnel to schedule and execute drilling and blasting activities efficiently.
- Record and report operational data, including drilling progress, equipment status, and any incidents or hazards encountered.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid underground mining certification or relevant training as required by federal (MSHA) regulations.
- Minimum (3) Experience operating twin-boom jumbo drilling equipment or similar heavy machinery in an underground mining environment.
- Strong understanding of mining safety standards and practices.
- Ability to work in physically demanding and confined underground spaces.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Additional certifications in heavy equipment operation or mining safety.
- Experience with computerized drilling control systems.
- Familiarity with mine ventilation and ground control principles.
- First aid and emergency response training specific to mining environments.
- Previous experience working in a unionized mining operation.
WORK SCHEDULE & ENVIRONMENT
Working a 21 day on, 21 day off rotating schedule, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.
Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, internet & cable tv programs. Cell service is available when using Wi-Fi. The Company provides bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
