Title: Instructor

Work Location: NNLC - 1400 Wedekind Rd., Reno, NV 89512 or Outreach Location
Hours: Monday through Thursday – 5pm to 8pm | 12-13 hours per week | All Instructors attend a bimonthly 1-hour meeting
Exempt/Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt – Hourly Employee – Part-Time
The instructors at Northern Nevada Literacy Council are a valuable and significant part of the Adult Basic Education programs offered by the organization. Instructors supervise and manage students in the classroom. Instructors serve as mentors and emulate the professionalism and skills students need to complete courses and further their careers and/or enter the workforce. Under the direct supervision and mentoring of the Academic Director, instructors are charged with the delivery of instruction to ensure all students reach the learning outcomes of each Adult Basic Education program. The following is a list of responsibilities of the instructor. Additional duties may be assigned by the Executive Director, Operations Manager, or Academic Director as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Creating level appropriate lesson plans.
- Provide instruction to adult English language learners.
- Provide a learning environment that is welcoming to English language learners of various backgrounds.
- Integrate civic and digital literacy as appropriate in instruction.
- Communicate with student services personnel to refer and coordinate supportive services for students.
- Record daily attendance.
- Document student notes and updates in LACES, a student database system.
- Maintain student confidentiality and follow FERPA.
- Attend bi-weekly instructor meetings to collaborate with other instructors and participate in professional development
Instructional Delivery, Curriculum Development, and Classroom Environment
- Provide instruction to students enrolled in the site’s Adult Education Program: High School Equivalency Preparation, English Language Acquisition, and/or Integrated Education and Training.
- Demonstrate accurate and current knowledge of subject matter.
- Ensure all students enrolled receive the course approved standardized syllabus.
- Develop a clear lesson plan with activities appropriate to class and level of students.
- Submit all lesson plans to the shared file for Instructors, so substitutes and Academic Director can access as needed.
- Provide a learning environment where students feel welcomed, valued, and respected.
- Promote and encourage active student participation.
- Implement a variety of instructional delivery methods that help students make learning gains.
- Use appropriate materials, technology, and resources to help meet learning needs of all students.
- Use multiple assessment methods, including CASAS, to guide instruction.
Student Services and Support
- Refer students to Student Services office to be connected with resources in the community.
- Implement Northern Nevada Literacy Council student retention policies.
- Encourage students to pursue further learning opportunities such as the IET/IELCE programs.
- Direct students to Student Services for enrollment in workforce development programs and for post-secondary transition.
Administrative Tasks
- Ensure attendance is recorded accurately and daily using class roster and online tracker.
- Properly document all advising, academic concerns, and attendance concerns in LACES.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and other professional information.
- Provide Student Services office with feedback about student performance as needed.
- Maintain all instructional materials and supplies used to teach coursework and notify Front Desk Intake Specialists or Academic Director of needed replacements.
- Communicate effectively with program administrators and colleagues regarding expectations and programmatic updates.
Professional Development and Professional Responsibilities
- Attend biweekly Instructor Professional Learning Community meetings when possible.
- Engage in approved continuing education and professional development opportunities.
- Consistently maintain regular punctual attendance for class instruction.
- Maintain proper care and safe use of NNLC equipment and property.
- Interact in a positive manner with students, teachers, administrative staff, and community.
- Demonstrate an enthusiasm for the subject material that will foster a positive learning environment for students.
Professional Dress
To model workforce development while on campus, instructors are expected to follow the dress code as described in the NNLC Employee Handbook. Business casual attire should be followed at all times.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree. Preferred to be in Communication, English, English Literature, Education, or related areas.
- Teaching in a classroom. 1 year minimum preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- TEFL, TESOL, TESL, or CELTA certification.
- Classroom facilitation strategies.
- Curriculum development and lesson planning.
- Demonstrated ability working with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
Pay: From $20.00 per hour
