The Northern District of Alabama is currently seeking one attorney for a permanent Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position in our Civil Division.

This position is located in the main office in Birmingham. Birmingham is an area of rolling hills, beautiful lakes, downtown lofts, evening concerts in the park, nationally ranked restaurants, and an amusement and theme park.

As needed, additional positions may be filled using this announcement.

Qualifications:

The attorney filling this position will represent the United States, its agencies, and employees predominantly in civil litigation brought by or against the government. The attorney may handle a variety of cases including: actions under the Federal Tort Claims Act (premises liability, vehicle accidents, medical malpractice, etc.), constitutional tort claims against federal employees, general employment litigation, and litigation filed by federal prisoners and immigration detainees. The attorney may also pursue affirmative claims on behalf of the government.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) by their entry on duty date. Law school graduates and current law students taking a July 2026 bar examination may be considered, subject to the foregoing requirements.

United States citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong legal research and writing skills
  • Prior civil litigative experience
  • The ability to work in a supportive and professional team environment with client agencies, support staff and other attorneys, and a demonstrated commitment to public service

Responsibilities:

Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.
