About the Department/College

The Department of Educational Specialties prepares educators to meet the needs of all learners in today’s classrooms and communities. Programs are offered in special education, bilingual and multicultural education, career and technical education, and educational technology. Courses are designed with flexibility in mind—available both in-person and online—to support students balancing work, family, and academic responsibilities. The Department of Educational Psychology offers an APA-accredited Combined Counseling/School Psychology Ph.D. program; a NASP-approved School Psychology Ed.S. program; master’s programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, and Human and Community Relations; and a bachelor’s program in Applied Human Behavior. Faculty in the departments work collaboratively to support student learning across programs.

Both the Departments of Educational Specialties and Educational Psychology are housed in NAU’s College of Education. About the Position

The Departments of Educational Specialties and Educational Psychology seek a full-time, career-track Assistant Teaching Professor beginning in Fall 2026 to serve our Special Education and School Psychology programs. This is a joint appointment between the two departments. The successful candidate will teach School Psychology and Special Education courses, with an emphasis on school-based psychoeducational, developmental, and academic achievement testing; and will serve as a core faculty member for the dual certification B.S.Ed. and the M.Ed. in Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) and School Psychology Ed.S. programs. As a core faculty member, they will be involved in teaching, accreditation, and programmatic decision-making. We are interested in candidates with experience working in special education/school psychology at the PK-12 level, who have a commitment to ethical, contemporary research supporting evidence-based practices. We encourage candidates with a passion for high-quality teaching, supervision, and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This position is at our Flagstaff campus, and the faculty member will collaborate with statewide campus faculty.

Responsibilities Include
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in School Psychology and Special Education.
  • Participate in relevant institutional and professional service.
  • Participate in programmatic and accreditation efforts for the School Psychology Ed.S., and dual-certification and master’s ECSE programs.
  • Advise and mentor graduate students in the School Psychology program.

Minimum Qualifications

Educational Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in School Psychology, Special Education or related field by date of hire.
  • Either an Ed.S. or Doctoral Degree in School Psychology by date of hire.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Eligibility for School Psychologist certification in Arizona.
  • Prior teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate level. Experience as a graduate assistant is acceptable.
  • Prior experience working as a School Psychologist in a school-based setting or working with young children with disabilities.
  • A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience teaching university-level assessment courses focused on school-based settings, and on young children with disabilities.
  • Experience evaluating young children with disabilities in natural environments/settings and school-based settings.
  • Prior experience with supervision and training of graduate level students.
  • Prior experience supervising master’s and doctoral students in school-based settings.
  • Knowledge of instructional approaches for young children with disabilities aged birth to eight years old.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based interventions for PK-12 students.
  • Nationally certified school psychologist.
  • Prior experience with accreditation processes.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report

Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
